Were the Bands of Mourning mentioned in Shadows of Self? I feel like I've heard the name recently and I feel like they were mentioned briefly.... maybe at that party where all the relics were displayed? I remember coming across the term and forgetting what it meant, so going to the wiki to refresh my memory.

I'm excited to get into Bands of Mourning! :joy

I can't remember because the last bit of the book all I can remember as of right this moment is that huge twist out of left field.

 That's fair. Unfortunately, I don't have Shadows of Self on Kindle so I can't just search for it.... let's see if google will help me...

Ok, found it!
He walked into the cavern, trying to imagine what it had been like to huddle in one of these caves, the world dying outside, wondering if you were going to spend the rest of your short life trapped in darkness. He trailed his fingers on the stone walls as he wound around corners. The place was large and open, but also contained a series of smaller, bulbous chambers at the side. Most were part of the museum, and contained plaques with quotes from the Originators, written in metal. Others contained depictions of the rebuilding of the world, or other relics such as a replica of both Harmony’s Bands and the Bands of Mourning

So it's just a casual reference to them, no description of what they are.

So those refer to the metals that Sazed was using and these 'Bands of Mourning'. I wonder of those are the metals that maybe the Lord Ruler was using? Maybe that's a stretch. Who else was a Feruchemist like that? Hmmm...

Oh yes, I only posted the above quote because it was in the book we just read and didn't provide any additional context that could be considered spoilers. :) Sanderson novels are best experienced first-hand!

Yes, it wasn't a reference to your quote Kassina, but a reply to Thaddius' speculations :D

Ok so thus far I have studiously avoided reading any of your posts  I have now read the first 6 chapters. I'm guessing someone is a kandra, although I thought they were all dead. But that would easily explain why Wax keeps seeing Bloody Tan.

ETA: Very pleased I figured it out :D

So I guess the kandra somehow re-spiked themselves, or Sazed did maybe.

Leira, I would stay away from this thread until you have finished the book. Especially page 32 :look:

Well I finished it so I guess I can go read the spoilers now  I enjoyed it, overall, but it wasn't my favorite. One somewhat unfortunate thing I've noticed reading all of these back to back is how often Sanderson says "he/she Pushed on... etc" and it gets very old

The twist wasn't entirely surprising, I don't think. I was a little surprised by the governor thing. Also, Arendel gives off some Vimes vibes, don't you think?

Whose writing is that on the map of the basin at the front of the book?
I noticed this, too, it looks like the writing found on various things in the Stormlight Archives, if I remember correctly.

Ok, now responding to things. I think we've all finished it now, but spoilers for the whole book, just in case.
Maybe that’s how she learned to talk into people’s minds like Ruin could?
I interpreted it as she could do this because she had a... trellium? lol a spike of Trell's metal. Presumably he's a Shardbearer of some sort, and his metal obviously grants her extra powers, so I was assuming that's what let her do that.

The idea of theology and worship is interesting when you live in such a certain world.
I think this was actually one of the things I didn't like about this book. This is not meant as a jibe at any Christians here and I don't really want to discuss it, but I was raised very conservative Christian and left the church earlier in my 20s. The main "theme" of the theology in the book, why doesn't Harmony stop bad things from happening and is he really God if he can't do that, is extremely similar to a lot of the theological arguments I had when leaving the church, so it made me somewhat uncomfortable. Because of course the argument here is that well, obviously God exists, so he has a reason for doing it that way. I don't know, it just was... very clearly inspired by RL Christianity/Mormonism to me, and that's one of the things that I personally do not enjoy about the Mistborn books (again, purely personal thing!! I found it very distracting).

So… Paalm innate when Wax finds him with Drim’s body, right? (during the attack on the Governor's mansion) Innate’s already dead, right? Does she just quickly run down the hallway, write the cryptic message and throw off her cloak, and then run back to pretend to be Innate for when Wax finds her? Did she write the message ahead of time? I feel like I need a timeline of events.
Innate was definitely already dead, because she says she was upset about having to shoot Drim, and Wax realizes it was so she had an excuse for having a bloody shirt. So she must have run quickly and done all that, somehow.

Though though looking at the book name, Bands (rings?) Mourning? (uh-oh)

Were the Bands of Mourning mentioned in Shadows of Self? I feel like I've heard the name recently and I feel like they were mentioned briefly.... maybe at that party where all the relics were displayed? Thanks for posting that quote. I also noticed something else, though. In the 4th part of the broadsheet, the story about Gentleman Jak (which I found amusing because I recently watched the shoe Gentleman Jack ) there's a reference to "Lord Mistborn's clasps of wasing" which could maybe also be bands of mourning?

Something else interesting I noted in Ch. 16:
If a tiny invader enters your blood, Bleeder said, the entire body begins to spin around it, to find it and eliminate it. ... But what is very interesting is when the body turns upon itself, and these soldiers run wild.
I think she's talking about autoimmune diseases here, kind of neat.
