Oh Ty :facepalm I find lots of errors in your logic, but I'll wait for the Board to respond. No need for me to spiral out the thread. If you want to talk about it privately I'm happy to.

I can confirm that reopening applications was considered, it was part of the discussion with the other officers. I don’t know the reasoning or discussion held among the board members, but trust that they believe this is the best course. While officer positions are fairly long term, they aren’t usually permanent so there will be other opportunities in the future.

I know we all want to have a say in these things, I usually feel discontented by the fact that I get no vote in officer hiring even though I’ll be working closely with whoever gets the job, but reality means we can’t all get our votes in the process if we want it to move at anything but glacial speed. At some point we do have to accept the part of the Tower that has to operate like a business.

Opening applications for a short period of time, such as one week, would hardly be glacial.

I think the big thing here is that there are probably people who have the time and capacity to do a great job as COO but didn't want to deal with the membership and public figure part of things that the new CMO will need to deal with but the COO won't. *points to the threads in the Executive Meeting Discussion forum*

The CMO position wasn't voted on until we had a full slate of board members, so that's why we didn't advertise the CMO with the Keeper hiring post. I'll admit, that may have been an error - to put out the Keeper hiring post first before firming up board members and voting on the CMO, but that's what happened, so that's what we're working with. The board discussed reopening the application process, but decided to go with the current pool of applicants. As Cassie mentioned, yes, these positions are usually long-term, but there's always the possibility of an officer position opening up in the future.

Sorry, I think my comments didn’t come across as I intended. For this particular issue (reopening application) I don’t disagree and can’t comment on why the board decided as they did. Someone from the board will hopefully take the time to comment on that.

the rest about speed and desire to be involved was more of a global comment. There have been a lot of discussions about what the membership at large thinks is the best way to do things. Both here, in the exec meeting forum, and elsewhere. That is the desire to have a say I’m talking about that (personal opinion) is never going to be satisfied. I know some of it stems from lack or loss of trust, but I feel a lot of that is because we all care about this place and we all want things done in certain ways. But the Inc. in our name kinda kills the ability to really function that way.

I still don’t think I have the right words to express my thoughts here, so I apologize if it doesn’t make sense. And I don’t want to sound like I think expressing opinions isn’t a good thing, never stop that. Just trying to find ways to explain why things made public might not always align with those opinions.

Im going to stop rambling now.

Okay thank you, that makes sense. I know there are a lot of moving parts and transitional hirings and it's easy for me to sit on this side of the table and judge on how *I think* things should have been done, but I do wish the process would have gone differently. No one can turn back time though.

Honestly from a professional level if the job description changed and a second position opened the second new position should have had an application process. And for current applicants to ask which of the two jobs they want to put their application forward for.

Ty it's not a matter if an applicant thought they could do both.. itsca matter of if they wanted to do both. And now that the job is split into two positions the second position should at least have can application period. If for anything to at least not have the appearance of not being professional.

Speaking just to the hiring process as it stands right now, we essentially had 3 routes we could have gone when it came to hiring since the application period had already long since closed by the time we new people had joined the board and we could have a meeting. We could:

a) Hire for both positions from the pool of candidates we have for Keeper of the Chronicles (COO)
b) We could hire from the pool of candidates for COO, and once that was complete (or potentially concurrently) we could open a new hiring process for the CMO position
b) We could open a new round of hiring for both positions (COO and the CMO)

We talked back and forth and forth and back. Ultimately, the consensus we came to is that neither of these positions are really new. They are a reduction in scope/responsibility of the Keeper/COO position vs something brand new being created. Yes, this means that some people may not have sent in an application because they felt as though their strengths didn't necessarily fulfill the entirety of the old job description even if they might be a good fit with a more specialized scope of responsibility. But they had the opportunity to do so. The applicants we have took the plunge and stepped up to volunteer without having a single inkling that the demand of this position may change. We definitely talked about all of that! We have so many talented individuals here who want to give back and contribute, and that is fantastic! In the end however, we recognize that no one stays in these types of positions forever (except perhaps for Toral...:P ) so this will come up again in the future. We have confidence and belief in the applicants we have, so even if we might get a couple more by reopening, it didn't offset the downsides of timing etc and trying to get someone up and going in these positions as quickly as possible.

So bear with us, we're really trying to do our best by everyone while respecting the individuals who have applications on file for a position that just grew too time consuming for any one person to be asked to take on. We're excited to see where the new Keeper/COO and CMO/#namewillcomewepromise will assist our Amyrlin in taking us in the future.

So just so I can clarify for my brain, the COO/Keeper position remains as the Amrylin's right hand. The new CMO person will be the left hand at the same level as Keeper or a step below Keeper and on par with a Director (or whatever Cassie, Toral, Erin are)?

If I’m understanding correctly, it’s an expansion of the C-suite/Officers. The CMO will be equal to COO/Keeper(vacant), CFO/Cassie, and CRO/Toral. They all defer directly to the CEO/Serenia.

Directors report to Officers. For example, Ilverin as Director of Research reports to Toral/CRO/Archivist.

a flow chart would be great. :look:

We have a new graphic coming - which will be much prettier but for now, Morrighan is correct. First, we have our CEO/Amyrlin and the officers that report to her (CFO/Shatayan, CMO/nametobedecided, COO/Keeper, and CRO/Archivist). Then, the various Directors/Departments (Community Outreach, Events and Conferences, Marketing, Membership, Research and Records, and Technology) report to those officers.
