Ryu makes an interesting point about a possible backstory for Elyas. I don't know that I agree, but I'm intrigued by the idea. Was there ever a discussion of how the Tinkers would respond to someone who left their way of life? As in, would that person be welcomed back for visits, or shunned?

They seem to be completely shunned from the flashbacks and the way Aram is treated, Elyas's treatment seems to be of a Shunned child who was forgiven..somewhat for his stupid actions in his childhood, at least by his blood family, notice The Seeker's wife is much more antagonistic to Elyas than the Seeker himself is.

Chapter Recap time! YAY!

Chapter 35 :

Of course Rand chooses the red here, this is total Ta'veren Influence at work, the Red wrappings benefit him greatly through his stay in Camelyn, we also meet Gill. I like Gill, he helps out simply because Rand and Mat are friends of Thom's.

Do you think Rand played at all while he was at the Blessing? he seemed to be there for a few days, also Hehe "I wish I had Perin's way with women" those lines always make me snicker.

Chapter 36

Loial! I love Loial and hate that he gets thrown to the side in later books, as he is the first person to realize something not even Moraine figured out this early.

All 3 of the Emmon's field folk are Ta'veren, and maybe more. I don't think Ta'verenness can work as it is shown to do without it being able to be transferred like an infection, or at least subject to the butterfly effect. How many events had to happen for Egwene in the way they did despite it being completely unlikely for them to do so..for her to end up where she was.

Chapter 37

I love this side of Nyneave, and I am incredibly sad to have seen it go by the wayside as she gained use of the power, if anyone would have ended up using the power in ways nobody expected it should have been the wisdom, I always expected her to be the one to like pull a sneak attack on a forsaken..and catch them utterly by surprise with a lighting bolt to the back.

Chapter 38

Not a whole lot to comment on here, we see Lan being..Lan towards Nynaeve, which is a good sign he likes her.

Chapter 39

Hi Logain, you know, it occurs to me that with what we learn Later..the Trollocs and Fades would have had a very bad day. Just imagine the reaction of the people of Camlyn..if the trollocs started attacking..then Logain breaks his sheild..and starts attacking the trollocs, you have 5 Aes Sedai, 1 Male Channeler..a great Captain and several armies in Camlyn at the moment, did the fades know this? It would have been interesting to see just what would have happened.

Chapter 40

One of my favorite characters, one of my meh characters and one of my least favorites...hmm make that two of each since the queen, Bryne and Elaida are here too.

It bothers me that Rand did not tell the most sensible reason why he has a Heron Mark Sword. "My Father went out in the world when he was young...he brought it back with him, when I left the two rivers..he gave it to me and showed me a little of how to use it. What does the Heron mean? is it special?"

Chapter 41

So..Moraine used healing here, with an Angreal. Didn't? any of the other Aes Sedai wonder just WTF was going on?

That always gets me too. Tell the truth properly, dangit!

She did use the power in ways no one expected. Maybe not flashy battle magic, but she healed in a way they'd never seen before, and even slightly disapproved of.

Re: 2015 Re-Readalong: EoTW, Chapter 35 - Chapter 41

I immediately thought it was silly for Rand to just pick the red or white cloth without knowing what they meant. Clearly they meant something important! I also loved learning about Thom's past, although a lot of it didn't make complete sense to me the first time through. Too many new names.
Yeah! He can't be the only visitor to the city to now know what the colors mean. Surely he could find someone to ask. Gill would be happy to tell him.

I was so happy when Loial ended up being a recurring character! :joy He's one of my favorite characters of the series. :)

I was also surprised later in the series when Logain became a major character. I really expected him to just be an illustration of a 'false dragon' and what happens to them That he'd go to Tar Valon, get stilled and we'd never hear from him again. It's really different reading these chapters knowing what's going to happen with Logain in the future.

Elaida's Foretelling was interesting, but what really surprised me is that Morgase talked about knowing a Two Rivers accent. I felt like there was a lot to her story that we weren't being told, and a lot happening in that scene in general that made sense to the other characters but not to Rand.
That surprised me as well. I realize it's part of the realm (technically), but it's definitely curious that she knows a Two Rivers accent well enough to use it as proof that his story is plausible.

Meg Sedai :fistbump

Edit: Elaida complacently knitting away totally reminds me of Madame DeFarge in A Tale of Two Cities. :look: Creepy in both cases.
It reminded me of Cadsuane, too. I guess Aes Sedai just like knitting? :cheeseeni:

Mat said:
Let's leave for Tar Valon now. Or south, to Illian. I wouldn't mind seeing them gather for the Hunt of the Horn. If we can't go home, let's just go.
Foreshadowing!

Rand said:
The innkeeper was fat, he was pleased to see
 Oh, Rand.

Loial said:
Children cried, and women screamed, and a mob chased me all the way across the city, waving clubs and knives and torches, and shouting, 'Trolloc!' I'm afraid I was almost beginning to get a little upset.
:rofl People running and screaming and threatening him and Loial is only just starting to get upset. :p

Rand said:
I didn't know Ogier believed in the Pattern, Loial.
I found this an interesting quote. Usually there's not much talk about believing or not believing in the Pattern. It's just taken as a matter of course that it exists.

-It's fun watching Lan and Nynaeve together. :pleased-1: And I love how worried Lan gets when she's late.
-Man, Elaida is creepy. :brown-blink: Though that's clever of her to avoid stating the full prophecy loud enough for everyone to hear. She can still truthfully claim to have said the whole thing, but it won't freak out Morgase and Rand will be free to go. :)

Re: 2015 Re-Readalong: EoTW, Chapter 35 - Chapter 41

Chapter 34
First mention of Luc and Tigraine.
"Morgase is no puppet..." Maybe not right now, and maybe not to Aes Sedai, but later...

Chapter 35
Loial! <3
Funny: "I was almost beginning to get a little upset." With all the people yelling Trolloc at him and chasing him through the streets (so I imagine), he still was barely irritated. Like when gnats buzz around a human's face. :giggle
There's a theory floating around somewhere that the Ogier are alien and literally from another planet. I'm reading through this time with that sort of in the back of my mind. The Ogier are alien, in the mundane sense that they're extremely different from humans. They have very very long life spans; they need the stedding to live; they're tied to the land in a way humans are not.
Loial thinks Rand is Aiel.
When Rand mentions Manetheren, Loial says, "Your pain sings in my heart, Rand al'Thor. We could not come in time." This is a piece of history I want! We know Manetheren was betrayed, but where were the Ogier in all that? I can't imagine Ogier betraying anyone they'd promised help to. Were the Ogier coming to help? Gaaaah more info needed.
Loial says he didn't always listen to Haman's lectures, but he still knows a lot -- more than Moiraine, in some areas.

Chapter 37
Lan, to Nynaeve: "Are you willing to take a chance?"
Nynaeve: "To help an Emond's Fielder? Of course!"
And THEN she asks what chance.
Nynaeve has something of a Foretelling -- is listening to the wind a kind of Foretelling? If so, the Two Rivers folk take it as something normal (for Wisdoms).

Chapter 38
Perrin's sense of smell is ramping up -- he could smell what's his name on the cloak.
Lan turns to go help Nynaeve, is called back by Moiraine, and then the exchange when Nynaeve returns! <3
And this is the first time we see Perrin's yellow eyes.
Sounds like being a Wolfbrother requires an intermediary. I wonder if this is to get through it smoothly and safely, or if all Wolfen require it.
Love this quote from Lan: "But that's not for us to worry about, eh, blacksmith? We'll fight the Shadow as long as we have breath, and if it overruns us, we'll go under biting and clawing. You Two River folk are too stubborn to surrender."

Chapter 39
Was the beggar Fain?
Rand doesn't think much of Perrin's climbing abilities.
I wonder who the Aes Sedai with Logain were? And Moiraine mentions later that they were all Reds, so who the hell were the Warders with them?

Chapter 40
Elayne's pockets are filled with the same stuff Rand would expect in a Wisdom's pockets.
Gawyn, with a little accidental foretelling: "Elayne ought to choose her husband from [the Two Rivers]. It'll take a man with a will like stone to keep from being trampled by her."
Elaida is so childish. She's keeping the palace grounds green (and we see her growing roses later in the books). And she asked Elayne to choose one farm to keep green and growing? Ugh. She makes my stomach turn.
In the throneroom, Elaida sits on a low stool. I'm surprised she doesn't insist on something grander.
Elaida's Foretelling is pretty straightforward.
Do Rand and Gawyn ever get to know each other?

Chapter 41
I love the way Lamgwin treats the cat. He's very careful not to disturb it.
Basel Gill could be a dangerous man (look at the way he handled the Whitecloaks).
And my earlier question about how Darkfriends could feel Mat and Rand: Yes, they could feel the dagger.
When Mat sees the Two River folk, he seems to see into them. Perrin = changed. Nynaeve = can't make herself forget she's a pretty woman. Egwene = what do you dream about. He hits exactly on the things they don't want the world to know.

Yes, the beggar is Fain. He followed Rand, along with the Fades and trollocs that's outside the walls. We will meet them in next chapters...

Well, there were only 4 Aes Sedai and a dozen warders, right? (it was either a dozen or a half dozen... but I remember noting it was more than the number of Aes Sedai mentioned) Even if they Reds and don't have Warders, the Warders could easily be unbonded. Aren't there a bunch of unbonded Warders at the Tower?

Re: 2015 Re-Readalong: EoTW, Chapter 42 - Chapter 48

In chapter 42, we find out there are 20 Red Aes Sedai in Caemlyn.

I guess they could be unbonded men from the Tower.

Re: 2015 Re-Readalong: EoTW, Chapter 42 - Chapter 48

Probably unbonded.

However the real kicker is. If They send Unbonded warders into battle with Reds when someone shows up who can channel and declares himself dragon.

Why don't the reds just bond Warders in the first place!?

She did use the power in ways no one expected. Maybe not flashy battle magic, but she healed in a way they'd never seen before, and even slightly disapproved of.

Yes mother she did do some interesting things with it, but Aes Sedai culture in terms of Combat magic seems to revolve around "FIREBALLS!" and even later Elayne and Nyneave do use the power in subtle ways to influence a fight such as using Air to trip an opponent.

I can give proper examples of what I mean if I remember when we get to A Memory of Light...in 2 years.

:giggle A long time, but we will get there!

Well, it's always someone under training to become Warders, so perhaps they were unbonded and newbies?

That is just a very long time to try and remember. "Hey I wanted to talk about this specific subject because it is something that annoys the crap out of me when it comes to Magic users in general..and Aes Sedai are somehow worse at it than Elves."

I think that the men were Tower Guard. How would Rand know the difference anyway?
Remember when Elaida sends Aes Sedai to destroy the Black Tower? She sends Tower Guards with them...

That's a good point. I wonder if they had the color shifting cloaks and that's why he assumed they were Warders?
