I guessed early on that they wanted to suggest to people who hadn't read the books that Egwene might also be a candidate for being the dragon reborn, and this seems to confirm that. I wasn't expecting that they might take gender out of the prophecies altogether, though. I thought the viewers would just learn the specifics later on, when the dragon was revealed to be Rand. Moiraine's narration here, referring to the dragon as "they" rather than "he", followed by the faces clearly suggesting Egwene as a candidate, makes me wonder if the change is going to be more substantial.
As much as I'd like to see fandom's head explode if one of the Two Rivers girls ended up being the Dragon Reborn, I think at that point you'd be leaving adaptation and writing a new story.
I think show-watchers who are new to the series will get to experience what we all did at the beginning, guessing between Rand, Mat, & Perrin, except they'll have a few more options to choose from.
It's interesting that after the lines: The Dark One is awakening, His whispers echo in the back of our minds.
You see Egwene start awake as if from a nightmare, almost implying that she's having the same kind of dreams as the boys do in the books
