It seemed to me from early on that they wanted to suggest to people who hadn't read the books that Egwene might also be a candidate for being the Dragon Reborn, and this seems to confirm that.

It's interesting to me that it's so explicit here, though! Moiraine's narration, referring to the dragon as "them" rather than "him", followed by the faces clearly suggesting Egwene as a candidate, makes me wonder if the change is going to be more substantial. Maybe in this turn of the wheel, the Dragon can be a male or female channeler? I'm really curious to see whether this turns out to be a red herring for marketing purposes or a significant change to lore.

I wasn't expecting that they might take gender out of the prophecies altogether, though. I thought the viewers would just learn the specifics later on, when the dragon was revealed to be Rand. This is odd, I always thought the Dragon Reborn would be male, due to the fact that there were so few male channelers and that ALL of the 'potential Dragon Reborn candidates' that you initially hear about are male....

As much as I'd like to see fandom's head explode if one of the Two Rivers girls ended up being the Dragon Reborn, I think at that point you'd be leaving adaptation and writing a new story.

Oh, I think its 100% certain that Rand will still be the Dragon Reborn. I didn't mean to imply otherwise! But, it seems like they want to make viewers consider that it could be Egwene. Whether that's just marketing for the show or will extend to the actual universe, I'm not sure.

Yeah, I feel like it is just building/expanding on what was in the books - namely that Moraine didn't know WHO she was looking for, just that the person had to be a certain age. I think show-watchers who are new to the series will get to experience what we all did at the beginning, guessing between Rand, Mat, & Perrin, except they'll have a few more options to choose from.

Uh.....why exclude Nyneave from all this? That part doesn't make much sense if they are going for gender neutral.

I think because she's older, and Moiraine would still be looking for young people born at a certain time, even if the gender isn't known.
