So not sure if it's ok to post this here. If not let me know, and where I should post it and I'll do so :)

I work in healthcare in a GP surgery. We get these books BNF (British National Formulary) each year. Basically, it tells doctors and nurses which medication can be prescribed for which medical conditions. For example: Hypertension and then pages of medication that can be prescribed for it.

We used to send books from previous years to countries which are not as developed. However, this hasn't happened for couple of years due to COVID and such. Last ones we sent to African countries when someone went to volunteer there for a few months.

We obviously have a lot of books from past couple of years, and some more that were left over from before. This information is still relevant and could be useful. Our doctors use last years' book if their room does not have a new book (we don't get enough to go to all).

The new books are due to come out soon and the doctors are piling up old books for me to get rid off. I hate binning them as there are many countries who need so many things, and also these cost about £60 a pop. My boss just gave me a go ahead to try and find charity who would take them instead.

So if anyone knows of an organisation that takes things like this, or works with organisation that could find these useful, can you let me know?

Thanks :)

I wouldn't know but it certainly wouldn't hurt to check with your local branch :pleased-1:

I hope you find a place to send them, sounds like a horrible waste to throw them out

Thanks guys. I have emailed them so hopefully they'll get back to me. I don't know if they will accept them, as I would have assumed we would have already been sending them there. Hopefully, I'll know something soon.

I hate throwing anything out. It's absolutely criminal the stuff we are forced to chuck out. I have a huge box of scissors and tweezers and forceps which I am supposed to throw away because their use by date was November 2021. They are metal! How can they have use by date? And then you have so many who don't have medical stuff!

I am using some for my arts and crafts, and have been 'convincing' colleagues that they can use them for sewing, gardening, etc.. just so I wouldn't have to bin them.

Completely understandable, @Melina Tashir, especially if they are individually sealed!

My kiddos have massive paperback textbooks they were issued by their school (and never touched because most everything was done digitally) when school went online during 2020-21. They haven't been recycled because I figure someone might be able to use them for home school, summer work, self-instruction. Just gotta figure out where they could be put to good use as well. Suggestions welcomed!

Can you donate them to a library? I don't know if they do textbooks or not.

Are the books written only in English?

Yes, only English, @Idine Espanyas.

Can you donate them to a library? I don't know if they do textbooks or not.

Thought about this, but I guess I’m concerned about the perforated newsprint pages inside eventually wearing out and getting lost. Reuse would be ideal, though. I may take them to our local library branch to see what they can do to preserve the pages to ensure longevity. Like you say, they may not even take textbooks.

Ok thank you. Something else to consider would be donating them to Returned Peace Corps Volunteer groups; I have contacts with PC Togo but they would probably want books in French. These groups usually keep in contact with volunteers on the ground in each service country and have a way of getting things from the US to volunteers in country.

There should be groups for English-speaking countries; I could look into these groups and see if they are sending volunteers or would accept these documents if you’d like @Melina Tashir . I think getting in contact with volunteers in Ghana could be feasible.

Yes they are all in English. Doctors without borders do not accept donations such as this only monetary from the response they've given me. They gave me another organisation but still no reply from them. I've not seen any books of this type in our library here but I will email. Thanks for the suggestion. :)

I don't have suggestions, but I also despise throwing out perfectly good stuff and am grateful for your efforts to pass these items along. :hug
