Why are the Aes Sedai freezing?

I am currently roughly halfway through The Path of Daggers and Egwenes gang are freezing their butts of, rationing coal and having to decide whether to have clear air inside or staying warm.

I guess I have missed something, but why?

Why are they not using channeling to stay warm? It's not as if they have a limited supply of the one power, right?

I guess it's not possible to warm themselves. I remember reading that using channeling to move heat and fire isn't recommended. But they are using channeling to heat wine? So since they can ymheat water, why not have a bath or similar inside every tent kept close to boiling as a heat source? Maybe because of moisture? Well, the why not heat water, add it to flasks and casks and have them heat up the air?

I'm hope there is something or a rule I've missed :)

Been a while since i read that bit but my guess would be innefficiency, amount of power needed to heat everywhere via water (and yes id imaging a load of water vapour in tents and clothing wouldnt be good). It tires them to use the power so doing it on that scale would be constant rotation and constantly drained channelers.

Someone might have a better reasoning though.

I thought it was moreso that they didn't want to showcase their location to other Aes Sedai/channelers.

That could be a reasonable reason, considering the soft magic system and having no hard numbers on how tough and tiring it is to do something. I would however argue that because of waters heating capacity, the physics in it all would say it makes sense to use water as a heating supply, sort of like a non-insulated water heater.

That sounds to me like a more reasonable expectation. The power required to heat that much water wouldn't be tiny. I will keep on listening and be aware if they explain any efforts to stay hidden. They do some channeling, so maybe it's to avoid being detected from far away? But even so, how insane would the channeling be to actually be detected? Considering the Aes Sedai preparing the capture of Rand by channeling a whole lot in that inn for a while, and that was noticeable up close, but was it noticed far away as well?

One fact, beyond detection, is attack by the Forsaken, the Black Ajah, or the Asha'man (in their minds). Even attacks from Trollocs. Using channeling tires people out and if they are set upon by enemy force, then they start that battle at an even bigger disadvantage of being tired.

Though to be fair, being cold and tired because you can't sleep properly isn't a good idea either

Maybe they only had heated blankets in the Age of Legends?

The Age of Legends might have had standing weaves to control the temperature. That time was pretty utopic

I think we hear Rand warming a room with a weave, or attempting to, but I don't think we ever hear any Aes Sedai doing the same. Maybe they don't know that weave?

I am fairly certain it is something that Asmodean told him about. So my assumption would be the Aes Sedai of the current age don't know the weaves.

The beginning of Chapter 2 in New Spring says both heat and cold doesn't touch Aes Sedai the way it does ordinary people. They don't need a weave or the one power to repel heat on a hot day because it's a concentration technique like when Rand enters the void. Why wouldn't the same apply to cold weather? Heat and cold still affects them physically but mentally they can shut out the sensation of being hot or cold

I know that at least for Novices and Accepted, they don't really know how to do this until becoming Aes Sedai. And even Aes Sedai still have to deal with the physical repercussions of prolonged exposure to heat and cold.

Though after giving the initial question some thought, it does baffle me. Aes Sedai heat tea all the time. From what I understand, it's just a simple thread of Fire. They're resourceful women. Educated. Even if there's a specific weave from the AoL that they don't know, you can't tell me that nobody would think to find a way to improvise.

In terms of being in a tent at least I'd think they've find a way to heat it up inside and it shouldn't be that difficult since it's a smaller space and would require less energy to keep it warm. While traveling would present a larger problem in staying warm
