I thought it was great and he gets better at portraying it in later books. Some people might consider it weak, but it all makes sense, which is what I care about.

It was a great idea on RJ's part. Like you said, Blythe, it closes up the plot holes and it's not only for that. It ties in the entire lore of that universe. It's about destiny and fate and coincidence and I absolutely love that concept from the books.

Though I do think that guilt probably played a part in Perrin saving Faile.

I don't think it's weak at all and if anything pretty clever in something that's simple on the surface but more complicated beneath. I've always believed that not everything in a story needs to have a big flowery explanation for why it's there and can be covered by something that takes away the need for that. It feels more concise to me

His feelings about her had been changing - for example, when he first me, he thought her nose was probably too bold, but by the time she was trapped, he had begun to wonder if she was the beautiful woman Min warned him about. He’s also thought that he he needed to work out how he actually felt about her.

I just love how Jordan's idea of romance there is "well... her nose isn't a trumpet so I guess I'll save her life..."

(this is hyperbole, by the way and not a reflection of my actual feelings about Jordan's writing of romance or of Faile) :look:

I understood her motivations, though. Even when annoying, Moiraine's entire life was devoted to finding the Dragon Reborn, letting him fulfill some prophecies, and doing her best to keep him alive and sane until the Last Battle. So when things endanger that, I think it scared her. Not that she'd admit it, of course. And keeping those secrets meant that she knew more, might prepare for more, and make better decisions than those around her.

Also, Cairhien.
True, but if she had said to them "don't take anything from here. it's cursed", Mat wouldn't have taken a dagger. Instead, she assumed (despite knowing Mat, which was really quite bizarre of her) that they would just realise eveything was super dangerous because she wanted them to.

I really came around on Faile by the end of TSR. Learning more about her background and aspirations made me sympathize with/appreciate her more. She’s headstrong but also fiercely loyal and affectionate to Perrin—at times anyway—even if she doesn’t always express it very delicately. Granted I’m not too far ahead of you, so I’m sure my opinion may be subject to change

I'm nearly 400 pages into TSR now so I have a ways to go yet and haven't yet reached learning more about her background and how she is as a person. At the moment she feels a little one dimensional but I do expect my opinion will change too

It may be a result of listening to rather than reading the books, but I didn't find Faile to be as grating as some other characters at times (not mentioning any names :look:). I'm looking forward to hearing how your feelings about her change (if they do)!

I'm not sure how old she is. At one point she says she is the same age as Ewin, who was 16 at the time, but later versions have changed that to "Ewin not really that much younger than she herself", so you could probably get her to be 17/18, but any older than that is really pushing it

I'll keep everyone updated on how my opinions change as I go along. I'm assuming it'll be rounding back to Perrin and Faile soon after everyone's had their "fun" in the waste and Rhuidean where I'm at now. Although I would like to get back to Min in Tar Valon after that cliffhanger chapter

I do hope your opinion of the lady Faile have continued to evolve as you have read on! She has been one of my favorite characters, and her exchanges with Perrin near the end of The Shadow Rising truly cement her and Perrin in my mind as my favorite people, because they are IMO the most down-to-earth people whose dialog while sometimes stilted sounds like something real people would say.

I forgot all about this thread and coming back to it after getting all the way through FoH and now halfway through LoC. My opinion has changed more in her favor as TSR went along and their wedding scene was very sweet. Learning more about who she is and her background really helped. I am looking forward to seeing more of her now beyond her little moment in the LoC prologue.
