Just a few quick questions for people who have recently found us, this survey is optional but we would love to know what you think!

How did you find us and what made you join?

What do we as a site have to offer members and other people in the wider WoT community? Even though you just got here, What do you think we can begin offering?

What about our community attracts people that they can't get elsewhere?

What are we actively doing as a site to attract non members to join? (This can be what attracted you personally or something you have seen us do that you think is helpful in attracting new members)

Thank you and welcome!

How did you find us and what made you join?: I found TarValon.net while I was cruising around Twitter. After bad experiences on Facebook, I was looking for somewhere to go that would be welcoming to new Wheel of Time fans without absolutely trashing the show, which is what brought me into the fold in the first place. When I clicked over to the site itself from that Tweet, I knew I had found what I was looking for.

What do we as a site have to offer members and other people in the wider WoT community? Even though you just got here, What do you think we can begin offering?: I would say that the immediate things I felt offered were kindness, enthusiasm for a new WoT fan, and a sense of community. I've been here for a month and a half now, and what I've learned is that what TV.net offers truly is a community that lives and grows, goes through it's tensions and pains but genuinely cares for people and strives to embody the Tower as Servants of All. That real-world application is truly unique, I think - or if not wholly unique to TV.net, then at least the best-applied that I've seen thus far.

What about our community attracts people that they can't get elsewhere?: This isn't just a fan site; those are a dime a dozen. It's as I said above - this is a community. It isn't just interested in WoT; it's interested in people and real-life problems and helping people learn about a variety of things as well as encouraging a deeper dive into Wot.

What are we actively doing as a site to attract non members to join?: We have a social media presence and it's being used and noticed by non-members. That's an important thing nowadays. I did find here via Twitter, after all! However, I think there can be more of this. We can use Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to advertise more of who and what we are, ask questions of the fandom (which is what I've seen the most of from TV.net's Twitter thus far), put up trivia polls, perhaps with giveaways (a copy of a book, a month of Prime to watch the show with, etc.). A Patreon with tiered rewards of the same nature could be great as well. TV.net's presence on social media is there; I just think it could be more.

How did you find us and what made you join?

When I initially discovered the site via twitter I cruised around it a bit such as I could then bookmarked it to come back to since it felt overwhelming at the time. I ended up forgetting about it as I got wrapped up in life stuff and remembered when I saw it on twitter again and signed up!

What do we as a site have to offer members and other people in the wider WoT community? Even though you just got here, What do you think we can begin offering?

Aside from being a place for fans to gather and discuss the books whether they're new or old to them I believe the site goes above and beyond just that to offering a wide variety of discussions but also make community service a large part of it's dynamic and expressing the importance of going out and doing what we can as individuals to help our off site communities.

What about our community attracts people that they can't get elsewhere?

The sense that the members all care about each other and their well beings while actively ensuring this is a friendly place. The opportunity of having the classes and allowing others to teach is also a very unique feature I've never witnessed on a forum anywhere.

What are we actively doing as a site to attract non members to join?

Just simply going beyond being a place for fans to gather together by offering such a broad variety of discussion areas and giving off the feeling of a warm and welcoming environment instead of a sterile cut and dry forum

I was told by a member, they thought maybe this site would be good for me:pleased-1:

This place got active, warm and welcoming staff.:hug
For wot fans it’s obviously the presence of “living” in the wot world. But honestly you would be totally fine being a member, and not wanting to lift up a wot book ever in your life too. It’s all sorts of other activities going on like charities, Mafia, D&D, hand works, cosplay, other books and games and..glitter lol. It’s basically nerdie heaven:loveoh oh! And awsome merch.. *drools*

For me personally, it has been accept and respect for being who you are, and not being pushed to be someone else, or being told to change to fit in..:love

I’m not really on a lot of social medias, so all I know about is members telling and recommending the site, and that is good! :pleased-1:

How did you find us and what made you join? I'm pretty sure that I followed from a Google search that I was doing looking for some answers during a re-read and the library came up...then I followed the library links to the Forum and main site.

What do we as a site have to offer members and other people in the wider WoT community?
Well the library for starters is great tool and resource. After that, I appreciated the Forum as a place for observations and other perspectives of the story (has been really fun for me). Finally, the diversity of the content on the forum has been really community building.

Even though you just got here, What do you think we can begin offering?
....hmmm, I drawing a blank for now....will keep "nogging" on this.

What about our community attracts people that they can't get elsewhere?
I think the openness and friendliness of the community. While any community (particularly on line) has drama; but the sensitive and kind way that it has been handled here is very welcoming compared to other similar communities.

What are we actively doing as a site to attract non members to join?
I notice the SM presence (although it doesn't seem to get much traction). Also, the welcoming process is very effective.

I found the Library while searching for some book related information. After spending time there, I realized there was also a forum. After exploring the public side of the boards and lurking for a week or two, I decided to join because it seemed to be a welcoming place that functioned as a real community, rather than a role-playing forum or a place for people to just debate the books. While there's nothing wrong with those last two in and of themselves, I was looking for a community, and especially one that wasn't focused on gatekeeping or one-upmanship--two things that have driven me off from organized fandom in the past.

It's the sense of real-world community and the idea of putting certain of the books' philosophies into practice that are the real treasures here, at least as far as I can tell so far. As was noted upthread, anyone can put up a fan site. It's something else entirely to create a community with a shared ethos and to keep that going for decades. Right now, I just wish I'd known about the group years ago instead of just discovering it recently.

What about our community attracts people that they can't get elsewhere?
I feel like I keep saying the same things here, but it really is pretty straightforward to me. ;) There are other forums, other newsletters, other wikis, other websites, and there's other merch. All of those things, though good and welcome, can be replaced. People can't be replaced, and real community can't be replaced. Even though I've only been here a short while so far, I have been welcomed, and I have seen evidence of deep and long-running real-world bonds between people. No matter what any other site offers, it can't just copy that. The real stuff has to be cultivated, and on today's Internet, it's a rarer flower than ever before.

Given that I found the site by total accident, I'm not entirely sure about active efforts to attract new members. However, I know that after I had lurked a bit here and over on Dragonmount, I considered the two and decided that I wanted to join here--not that I couldn't have just joined both, but I wanted to pick one and focus my presence. The sense of community I felt here helped me make my decision. I feel like having a visible presence in a way that showcases that sense of community and family could help to attract new members. This might be the social media presence (though I had to go looking for it to find it), and it could also be semi-public real-world events where people are visible as part of the group (though I'm not sure if we do much of anything like that. A meatspace friend of mine was part of Starfleet for many years, and they often turned out to conventions in uniform and the like, for instance.
