I don't know about anyone else, but it's been probably a decade since I read Way of Kings. In the past, every time I wanted to read it again, I'd lament at the size of the book and just go re-read the chapter summaries on the Coppermind instead. I didn't even finish Oathbringer until the day before Rhythm of War had released, and as far as RoW, I only got 100 pages in before stopping for whatever reason.

I have the hardcovers, but I went and got some Mass Market paperbacks because that's more my speed. i'm going to re-read the first three books, and finally read Rhythm of War instead of looking up random info on Coppermind every time I have a thought about something in the Cosmere.

I just finished a Warbreaker re-read a few nights ago and I really want to hear more about Nightblood. This is my current motivation to get going on the books again.

This thread will serve as an infrequent landing spot for me to get my thoughts out about stuff I missed, forgot, or loved and just want to talk about it again. Really looking forward to this again. Though I remember little about the first book, I remember loving it.

I hope you’ll be able to get through it!! Rhythm of War is probably my favorite.

Read through the prologue and first couple of chapters. The two things that jumped out at me the most was the message Gavilar left to Dalinar: “Find the most important words a man can say” which is now the earliest reference to the oaths that I’m aware of.

Secondly, when Cenn is watching Kaladin fight and he swears he sees the air warping/coming to life around Kaladin. The first reference to surge binding that is not Szeth, which was used as an exposition device to explain the system early on.

I remember when Warbreaker first hit paperback and they stuck the prologue to WoK in the back, I went to the bookstore to read it there and it was more than enough to get me excited to read these books.

Are the oaths the most important words a man can say? I’m not sure that’s true.

It was Gavilar telling Dalinar to FIND the oaths. Not that it was the oaths themselves.

For some reason, I thought it was way later in 'Book One' of this book that Sylph made her appearance to Kaladin, but then again, I remember the slave portion was a lot longer than it was, but being interspersed with flashbacks and such makes it seem longer than it actually was.

I watched a Sanderson podcast last night where he talked about open criticisms with Way of Kings and that was how front-loaded the book was with exposition, and he said he had to do that so that the reader wasn't pulled out of the story by any glaring plot holes. He likened the example to the "Why didn't the Fellowship take the Eagles to Mordor" argument that crops up a lot of people. He said that alone was one of the main reasons he frontloaded the book like he did.

I just started a re-read as well! I couldn't figure out what to do, and my mind kept drifting towards Way of Kings.

How far in are you? I’m only after the first Shallan chapter. I imagine this is going to take a month with the speed I am currently going at.

I actually appreciate stories that take time now that I’ve read Wheel of Time.

I'm ready to start her first chapter at the moment, although I think I'll read some tonight. I'm not sure of my pace yet.
