Shawl Tutorial: Measuring and Mathing

I found some no-frills plain cream fabric my daughter had in her fabric stash I may use to make a test pattern from. This way there will be room for error when trying work out the numbers/methods Alora and Cattrin mentioned above. Then I'll feel more confident when it comes to working with finalized fabric choices.

My outside fabric came, but it is an end piece with a lot of edges I will need to cut off. I'm hoping that Joann fabrics didnt count that as part of the yardage...

I have a liner (found some awesome polar bear to represent my bond), but I am still looking for the perfect fabric in the perfect shade of lavender. I also just said I'd need 6 yards when I really meant 6 feet, so maybe I shouldn't be ordering fabric right now...

Trying to use a fabric that requires me to cut two smaller triangles to fit together, however, the pattern isn't matching up on both ends of the triangle? Maybe it's the type of material?

No, but you could just measure the top edge and add seam allowance to get close.

Ok, so it doesn't have to be perfect I guess? I'm used to stitching with a 1/4" seam allowance. Can I do that or do you think it would be too small of a seam allowance?

It would depend on your fabric as to whether or not 1/4" is cutting it too close, if it looks like it might fray, I don't think I'd do that small, you don't want it fraying right through your stitching.

Merena, sometimes that happens, I've never been able to adequately explain why. There was probably a touch of stretching involved or the line isn't as straight as you think. I'm assuming that's your lining? It really isn't a big deal.

Yes - it is just for the lining, so no biggie. Just wondering if there was some sewing magic that I wasn't aware of...
