Inspired by Delara Morellin, the Servant of All Team presents a Servant of All playlist as a way to inspire, encourage, promote your personal current and future endeavors as Servants of All. Unlike a traditional self-motivational exercise playlist, this one is meant to entertain and energize oneself with songs about serving others while donating blood, volunteering your time, or any other activities involving service toward others.

You all have input on which songs appear in this list. Simply post a link to your suggestion below and tell us why it should (or should not) be included! We will update the list with everyone's preferences monthly.

Religious and/or spiritual music is welcomed! Songs just need a strong Servant of All message and not intend to convert or ostracize.

Ope! I missed this (probably due to the LOA oops) but I definitely do have suggestions to add!

Trevor Hall, You Can't Rush Your Healing. A reminder to be kind, first to yourself, and then to others around you.
-So, you can't rush your healing
Darkness has it's teachings
Love is never leaving
You can't rush your healing

Vienna Teng, Level Up. Always gets my blood pumping, and the message is excellent. Plus, she's a known environmentalist as well as being a musician.
-Let your faith die
Bring your wonder
Yes, you are only one
No, it is not enough
But if you lift your eyes, I am your brother

Disturbed, cover of The Sound of Silence
"Fools," said I, "You do not know
Silence, like a cancer, grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"

I believe I have a few suggestions,

Alicia Keys, Unbreakable - Nice uplifting song about love and community, and a good reminder when I am down that I can still chase my dreams.

"She ain't no different from me
And he ain't no different from you
So we got to live our dreams
Like the people on TV"

Ben E. King, Stand by Me - This song makes me smile and reminds me about how people need support of one another to prosper.

"If the sky that we look upon should tumble and fall or the mountains should crumble to the sea, I won't cry. I won't cry. No, I won't shed a tear just as long as you stand, stand by me.

Rob Thomas, Street Corner Symphony- Fun song, that helps me before work sometimes.

"Down to the corner
My sisters and my brothers of every different color
(Don't you feel that sunshine) telling you to hold tight?
Things will be alright
Try to find a better life"

Songs sent in for February! The ones suggested above all fit the idea of the playlist, and have been added to our running spreadsheet. They will be added slowly to allow time for anyone else to discuss them or the ones currently on the playlist. Be sure to check out the list again in the next few days to see which were added :)
__
In the meantime, I'd like to post one that we've been "on the fence" about:

...
It's not about win or lose
'Cause we all lose when they feed on the souls of the innocent
Blood-drenched pavement
Keep on movin' though the waters stay ragin'
...
One day, this all will change, treat people the same
Stop with the violence, down with the hate
One day, we'll all be free and proud to be
Under the same sun, singin' songs of freedom like
...

Oooh! Thank you for the reminder about Where is the Love? !

Anyone have thoughts about Matisyahu's song? It's not the most cheerful song, but could be motivating to the right person.

It is a bit, but honestly I feel as though it could fit in between a few songs well at this point. There's nothing wrong with a bit of a mood change so long as the song itself is supporting the goal.

Exactly. "Strong Servant of All message" is the ultimately number one factor. Righting the wrongs pointed out in One Day is what should be motivating despite not necessarily being sung to a cheerful tune.

Eta: but even that is up for discussion.

Hmm... hmm-hmm-hmm-hmm
Hmm-hmm-hmm-hmm
Hmm-hmm-hmm-hmm-hmm
Sometimes in our lives
We all have pain
We all have sorrow
But if we are wise
We know that there's always tomorrow
Lean on me
When you're not strong
And I'll be your friend
I'll help you carry on...
For it won't be long
Till I'm gonna need somebody to lean on
Please swallow your pride
If I have things you need to borrow
For no one can fill
Those of your needs that you won't let show
You just call on me brother when you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on
I just might have a problem that you'll understand
We all need somebody to lean on
Lean on me
When you're not strong
And I'll be your friend
I'll help you carry on...
For it won't be long
Till I'm gonna need somebody to lean on
You just call on me brother
When you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on
I just might have a problem that you'll understand
We all need somebody to lean on
If there is a load you have to bear
That you can't carry
I'm right up the road
I'll share your load
If you just call me
Call me
If you need a friend
(Call me)
Call me (call me)
If you need a friend
(Call me)
If you ever need a friend
(Call me)
Call me
(Call me) Call me
(Call me) Call me
(Call me) Call me

If you need a friend

Have been researching the meaning behind this song, but everything I'm finding presents it as "directed inward". In other words, it's to remind oneself to be patient with oneself in order to heal but not necessarily focused outward helping others. What source am I missing or what am I not understanding, @Ananke Zaresh? Totally understand the desire to be sound in oneself before being able to help others. Someone can't support an idea while they are still "on the fence" about that same idea. Is this what you meant?

So there's a bit of a difference to my mind about authorial intent vs the actual impact of something as emotional as music. Authorial intent is, yes, directed inward. A self-directed "Hey, don't push past this, sit with it." The impact however when you take the lyrics a bit more literally is that of a trusted friend sitting with you in the discomfort of pain or trauma; the Saturn Return; and a reminder that hey, everyone has baggage. So be kind to yourself first, sit with the singer in the moment and feel, and then go offer the same space to others by "passing on the song."

Like so:

Let me say I'm coming humble
I don't know what's right or wrong
I just keep, keep on believin'
Passing down an old, old song
An old song

Well, everybody's got that chapter
Of dark and darker days,
yeah
Saturn seems to be returning
And his essence can't be tamed

Some may like to fight it
Try to plan a secret attack
But the more you push it
The more it's pushin' you back

So, you can't rush your healing

---

In his passing on of the "old song"; ie the wisdom of the song itself; he's also passing the responsibility to keep it going. The "Saturn Return" is a kinda new-agey belief that when Saturn is in the same spot as the day you were born, you will go through a period of upheaval and be confronted with the things you need to heal. (it usually happens around the age of 29-32 which is a normal period of upheaval and self-actualization anyway) So the song functions as a reminder that some things are out of your control; the actions of others and the state of the world, the turning of the planets; but you can start small and begin self-healing before you take them on and then offer the lesson in turn to the next person.

You're right. Not all the suggested songs are currently in the playlist. The main reason is so more people have a chance to discuss each song's meaning as we are with You Can't Rush Your Healing at a slower pace. Another reason is to not overwhelm the Director of Marketing who is adding new songs on behalf of everyone's discussion every month. We don't want to email her over and over again if songs need to be added or removed for whatever reason as discussion evolves.

All the aforementioned songs will be added, but not necessarily all at once in case something comes up in discussion either about the artist or someone's interpretation. For example, my interpretation of some songs hasn't been SoA-focused and this helps me understand their meaning better. Everyone who suggests a song is also being given opportunity to have their suggestion added instead of March being all "Nem's Songs", if I'm explaining my thoughts coherently.

Ahh, ok, gotcha. Yeah, I was coming from authorial intent instead of looking at the song as an entity in-and-of-itself. Thank you :)

Oh good. Does that mean there's a separate playlist I'm missing for the character songs?

Oh yeah no worries! Authorial intent is an excellent place to start when things are confusing, and looking into how they meant a thing to exist definitely set a foundation... but then again, fan interpretation is just as valid if that authorial intent doesn't necessarily shine through how it was intended. XD

One of my favorite artists actually said something alone those lines to me once about my long-winded dissection of Go On Make Promises-

Just stopping in to say I really appreciate this playlist and discussion. I use it as my morning "moto" music.
