My vote is for him simply being a rabid mad man along the same lines as Masema. It wouldn't have taken much to manipulate him but I don't think anyone even needed to do that.

Actually that's true, in retrospect I don't know if he's ever stated to be a darkfriend, Graendal just calls him one of her "tools." It's likely he was just a fanatic that she had manipulated, possibly under compulsion. But it does seem like it wouldn't take much to pull his strings.

Hi. I am rereading on my kindle right now; I'm at the end of TSR and something just popped into my head about the Whitecloak that Graendal might have been talking about. I can't look it up because Dad still has my books, but was the Whitecloak Farran around in ToM? If so, could he be the one that Graendal was refering to? His behavior and actions seem a little off, and we know that there are darkfriends in the Children. I was just wondering if maybe Byar is just a red herring, since he is the more prominant character. It wouldn't be the first time that a seemingly minor character turned out to be something more. Just look at the darkfriend who tried to stab mat in the stable in EotW. We don't even learn her name until later and she causes considerable trouble eventually. I know that Byar did try to kill Perrin, but that doesn't automatically make him a darkfriend.

Did we ever learn more about the letters Verin wrote?

I don't remember anything specific - but I do think that telling Galad Rand's parentage would be worthy of one of Verin's final letters, even if there was nothing else in it. Galad's fanatical commitment to duty means he would be honor bound to support his brother, thus adding a powerful army to Rand's forces at Tarmon Gaidon. Verin didn't necessarily know Perrin would get that done on his own, and better to have more than one plan for it than no plans!
