What happened to them? I recently read the part where Elayne and Nynaeve took their ship to Tanchico. They were great! Interesting, unique, I loved reading about them. But I know in later books, I groan OUT LOUD when they show up. They're so annoying and I want to throw things at them (I like to envision I can actually throw my book into my mind at the annoying characters).

Yeah, I am not sure why they are so annoying in the later books. I loved them when we first met them.

I heard somewhere that Sanderson really dropped the ball with them.

Maybe another culture ended up taking over where they were originally going to do/go?

I haven’t gotten to Sanderson’s part of the Wheel of Time yet. But since we met the Sea Folk again in the Crown of Swords, I haven’t liked them as much.

Rand has them taking food to different ports and
they use the Bowl of the Winds to keep the weather in check at Shayol Ghul when Rand is in the cave.

I think they were just one of several things that there just wasn't time to flesh out properly. I think RJ had ideas, but he probably didn't finish it.

Such as what they were going to do with those small plots of land they got from Rand and Elayne.

Yes!
Maybe it's my hatred of Elayne rubbing off on me, and they interact with Elayne a lot. It's the whole "you have to respect my rank, but I don't have to respect you even as a human" thing.

Yeah it’s very that and there isn’t a lot of honor in their bargains. Nynaeve and Elayne to give so much so that they could fix the weather. I wish the Sea Folk were handled better.

One explanation might be that when we first meet them, they are in their comfort zone on their ships where they are the ultimate authority. The majority of Sea Folk we see in later books are far from water and ships and way outside of their comfort zone. They are also trying to force others to see them as equals (or more). This makes them annoying and unlikable. I wish RJ and BS made them more relatable.
