In collaboration with our Amyrlin, we have updated a couple of areas within the process of leaving a senior membership group.

The first modification is to making the request known. Instead of only emailing the Director of Membership, a Senior Member will also notify the Head of Ajah/Company Commander whenever practicable. It is understood that there may be valid reasons why the immediate membership admin might not be notified; but whenever possible, it is best practice to make them aware of the request at the beginning.

The other modification deletes the requirement of ever going through counseling with the Director of Membership. That position is definitely available as a sounding board or for general membership-specific information, but we absolutely do not purport to be in a position to provide any type of counseling service.

I'll put the actual language below in spoilers. The changes are in "bold" and effective immediately. This post is for notification of this relatively minor update. Hit me up on email, DM, Discord, etc anytime for a more in-depth discussion. Or with memes. And maybe your current favorite gif. :mdd2:

Old Version:
If a Senior Member no longer feels at home in their current Ajah or Company, they have the option to leave their membership group to find one which fits them better. A Senior Member who wishes to leave their membership group may apply by emailing the Director of Membership with the reasons they wish to leave. Once the Director of Membership receives the application, there will be a two week waiting period before a decision is made. The applicant may change their mind at any time during the waiting period. If the applicant is approved to leave their group and this is their first or second time leaving a Senior Membership group, they will be given three options: they may remain a Senior Member, demote to Accepted/Soldier, or demote to Citizen. If this is their third (or higher) time leaving a Senior Membership group, they will demote to Accepted/Soldier and go through counseling with the Director of Membership to find out if there is a root cause that needs to be identified.

Modified version:

If a Senior Member no longer feels at home in their current Ajah or Company, they have the option to leave their membership group to find one which fits them better. A Senior Member who wishes to leave their membership group may apply by sending a private message to their Head of Ajah/Company Commander, whenever feasible to do so. The Senior Member should also email the Director of Membership with the reason(s) they wish to leave. If this is their third (or higher) time leaving a Senior Membership group, they will demote to Accepted/Soldier or demote to Citizen.

I am curious as to why this part was added? I feel as though this undermines the whole point of the unaffiliated system.

Not necessarily. Being an unaffiliated SM just means you don't belong to any group. If you later decided to join a group again and then leave to become unaffiliated again and again and again, is where this ruling would apply

The third or higher part wasn't added, it was there already. What was changed there was that instead of being forced to have some sort of counseling session with membership (who isn't in any way qualified as a counselor) it's more up to the individual if they want/need someone to help them figure out if there is a deeper problem and who that person would be.

Thanks, Cassie. I just edited to “bold” more of the old version to clarify that the minor modification in that section is simply to delete the “counseling with Director of Membership”. Hope that helps to visually see the update.

I’m not sure how we migrated to cats and water gifs, but I can’t say I’m disappointed.

Good to know. I think this sounds a reasonable change.
