Hi everybody!
May is skin cancer and Melanona awareness month!

Being a Melanoma survivor myself, I want to spread the word about skin cancer awareness. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the U.S., and it is also the most preventable. This month I'll be sharing some facts, and reminding everybody that skin cancer is deadly dangerous! I've also made a few signatures and sig blocks we can all wear this month to help spread the word about skin cancer:

No problem everybody! I'll stop in each week to share some facts and information.

Seeing a dermatologist annually can be important if you spend a lot of time outdoors, have lots of moles, etc. I only found out I had skin cancer and got it taken care of because I saw something I didn't like about a mole, and made an appointment to see the dermatologist. Had I waited a few more months or not self-reported as quickly, they may or may not have been able to help me, who knows.

Get to know your skin, check yourself in the mirror. And look for anything new, changing, or unusual looking.
It could save your life.

I didn't tie in a fundraiser along with this since we've had quite a few going recently. But if anyone is interested in donating towards the fight against skin cancer, the two organizations I would recommend are The Skin Cancer Foundation, and the American Cancer Society. Skin Cancer Foundation does a terrific job spreading the word about skin cancer and also has a TON of information and educational stuff specifically for skin cancers. The American Cancer Society holds a special place in my heart as my grandmother worked there for years after she survived cancer herself.

You can find those two organizations online here:

American Cancer Society

I'll be gone next week so I thought I'd share a few extra today!

I’ve learned quite a lot from this thread. I probably still won’t wear sunscreen as much as I should, but at least now I have a better idea of why it’s a smart thing to do.

Hey everyone, I'm back from my little break to share more facts about Skin Cancer. This week I'd like to talk a little about the stigma that pale skinned people are more at risk from the sun than darker skinned people.

The simple fact is that while some people are more prone to burning, anyone can get sunburns and skin cancer. In fact late-stage melanoma diagnoses are more prevalent among Hispanic and Black people than among non-Hispanic white people. 52 percent of non-Hispanic black patients and 26 percent of Hispanic patients receive an initial diagnosis of advanced-stage melanoma, versus 16 percent of non-Hispanic white patients. And the estimated five-year melanoma survival rate for Black patients is only 71 percent, versus 93 percent for white patients. Don't be fooled by the color of your skin, everyone needs to try and prevent damage to their skin by the sun.
