What is Down syndrome?
  • Down syndrome (Trisomy 21) occurs when there is an extra copy of the 21st chromosome.
  • It is random.
  • Approximately 1 in 800 babies is born with Down syndrome regardless of ethnicity, gender, culture, or socioeconomic background.
  • Individuals with Down syndrome can have some health concerns as well as physical and intellectual disabilities.
  • World Down Syndrome Day is celebrated every year on March 21 because of the significance of the numbers (03.21) and this year is extra special because it is 2021!

So what’s the point of WDSD?
  • To raise awareness about Down syndrome and fight for the rights of all people with disabilities.

Why am I celebrating this year?

On August 14, 2020, my daughter Jane was born. A day later we found out she had Down syndrome. It was a huge shock for us and took some time to accept. After joining some online parent groups, I realised that I didn’t need to be afraid. People with Down syndrome are just as important and worthy as anyone else. They have value and rights and I wish I had known more before she was born so that I wouldn’t have had so much fear. I wish I would have helped out more instead of having an ignorant view of disabilities. We love our daughter so much and are ready to shout her worth!

I am Blue Ajah and this is my new Cause.

How can you participate?
  • Take some time to educate yourself on Down syndrome. It is the most common genetic condition and the chances are, you have met someone or know someone that has Down syndrome.
Some resources:

  • Wear blue and yellow, the colours for Down syndrome. I personally love these colours because in my mind, the Blue stands for justice and the Yellow stands for healing.
  • Wear crazy or mismatched socks.
  • Follow hashtags like #theluckyfew, #wdsd, #nothingdownaboutit

Do you want to financially help this cause?
  • This is not my reason for posting but if you’d like to help out, feel free to message me and I can send you some links for donations.

Do you have any stories to share or know anyone with Down syndrome?

She is so cute Juliya!!!!!! I don't know anyone personally with downs syndrome but when I was pregnant they wanted me to test for that and various other trisomies, and the dr literally said word for word "if it has one of those then maybe you might not want to fight so hard" in reference to me trying to give my son as long as possible inside after my water broke early. Which obviously is messed up, so I'm definitely with you on wanting to educate people on down syndrome :love

They are the most loving, sweetest people and their lives are worth living. On the 21st I'll wear the colors and do a post in her honor :)

Oh my word what a cute happy little face!

I had a close friend in college whose little son Nicholas has Down Syndrome. He was a sweet little love bug who liked They Might be Giants and doing science experiments. I moved out of state so I haven't seen them in years, but last I heard Nick is still into the sciences. He has had some health problems so I've contributed to some fundraisers for medical gear and surgeries over the years.

What a very worthy cause! :love

Here's a song that I hope you'll like and play for your daughter in a few years.
Thanks for the beautiful song, Linkelivar!
