One thing I didn’t notice for many years was the description of the Trollope killed in the ways is very similar to what Lews Theron did to his family.
Rand killing the Dark One, there are clues about what is going on there, Rand getting to Tarwins gap is just mysterious, the flashing blue lights might be because Thom had power wrought blades, though how is a mystery

Trollope was an autocorrect, but it amuses me so I’ll leave it.
I’ll probably comment on your other observations when I can do so without spoilers

You're right, it's eerily close to what Lews Therin did. Given that the Ways were made by saidin, I think it makes sense that they might meet that sort of end, perhaps because of Machin Shin or even just the rotting of the Ways as the darkness took further hold.

From Chapter 21: Listen to the Wind - Moiraine: "I gave each of the boys a token. It created a bond of sorts between them and me. So long as they are alive and have these coins in their possession, I will be able to find them."

A more concrete answer. Clearly I'm going to have to read these books more than once

I've been reading these books for 20+ years and I still notice new things on rereads.

Incredible Laurien!! I've really enjoyed reading this thread. I am excited for your thoughts for The Great Hunt.

It is concrete, but one of the issues with the oaths is that if a person thinks something is true, they can say it, so if she was never told the link would fail in a stedding, she could say it. It's also possible that she was told that, but because it happens so rarely, just forgot. But I think that line is probably why I assumed she lost the connection to Perrin when the coin was taken

I think the oath allows room for generally true statements without needing qualifiers.

If asked "What color is that cat?" an Aes Sedai could simply answer "black" without having to say "with yellow eyes and white a small white spot on the chest".

"What colour is the sky?"
"Blue."

Likewise for the coins, "in their possession" is generally true without needing to list every place they won't work.

Remember though, that all Perrin's possessions were returned to him after his first "interview" with Bornhald Sr and Byar. Except the axe, obviously. So he got his coin back after he first lost it, which would also account for why she felt the bond go away, then return.
I never thought about whether it would work in a stedding actually, I've just assumed that the above was the reason :look:

Well, since Moiraine said she created a bond with them via the coins, that would definitely make it a thing of the One Power, which implies that it wouldn't work in a stedding. So either explanation is possible...and perhaps we'll never truly know which it was!

Now that you have finished the book, you'll see a lot of the questions you had did get answered - such as what was up with Rand and the Whitecloaks in Baerlon, or how much the Lan-Nynaeve relationship did feature, even if the leap from "She really likes him and he likes her" to "it's a deep love" was sudden.
Once you started thinking about it, you will probably also have noted more examples of people dismissing information because it didn't suit them, or acting with total confidence in poor information - we noted 8 examples in this book, but there may well be others we missed

Baerlon and Min was probably what got me hooked. Before that it was a pretty straight forward Tolkien inspired fairly generic fantasy series (though the part about the Dragon being reborn to save the world as the thing people had feared most for 3000 years did set it apart), but the little glimpses of what was to come she threw out did it for me

@Laurien Achaur So, this is likely unrelated to discussion. But, I was discussing WoT with a friend who's not on the site over the weekend, and I remembered that my very first copy of the Eye of the world was the royalty free one from the early 00's. I'm at work, so a cursory Google search didn't yield it. Anyways, it's a pale teal background and...a purple and blue rock. Like...no one bothered to read the book to know what the Eye of the World is....? :rofl

How weird! Some covers it make it very clear that the either the artist wasn't given an overview, or the publisher was looking for the cheap option
