This month we are celebrating Parks and Recreation. While this has been celebrated since 1985 every July in the United States, as a community we’d like to celebrate it across the globe with our members this July. This month highlights the important role local parks and recreation play in conservation, health, wellness and social equity efforts in our communities across the globe.

Same with the charities too. :brofist-2:

+1 all this and I'd like to add (if I may) state parks here in the United States too! My family and I frequent our state parks all year round (hiking, camping, etc.) and try to donate where we can. We're big fans of both national parks and state parks!

Awesome, @Veriendha al'Riaha! Yes, state parks are just as spectacular as their larger, national park status counterparts. Even local community parks offer a peaceful respite from the day-to-day and should be cared for just as well. What is your favorite thing about those smaller community parks and encourage others to visit them?

Lovely initative! ☺️

For the Australian list I see you have some states covered (WA, SA & the NT) and the ones that are missing are:
VIC: https://www.parks.vic.gov.au/ (where I'm at!)
NSW: https://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/
TAS: https://parks.tas.gov.au/
QLD: https://parks.des.qld.gov.au/

Thank you for the additional links, @Veluene al'Myr! What activities do you enjoy most about the Victoria-area park system? It would be interesting to learn how parks differ (or don't) from parks elsewhere in the world :)

Hiking & swimming for sure! I love the variety throughout the seasons as the collage of photos shows. Thats the back of my fiance's head at the look out, one of my bro in the freezing alpine water, and myself during a dry summer and its all done at the same national park. Oh and the historic huts that are scattered through the alpine region (as pictured) are so wonderfully restored and some are great for camping when the weather gets bad and you are stuck on a trail.

Oh, what lovely photos :pleased-1: Thanks for sharing! It's cool you can still use historical structures when unexpected things happen out on the trails! Trying to think if there's anything like that here... Usually historical stuff is roped off and/or preserved for educational purposes. But, I mean, if it comes down to using that or surviving... :look:

I remembered this photo and wanted to share it here. It's a simple random chalk message scrawled onto a paved rest area on the way to my local MTB trail. Random encouraging messages like this always make my heart happy, and I hope they do the same for others as well.

What messages like this one have you happened across in your parks/trails? Do you carry chalk with you in order to leave words of encouragement when inspiration strikes?

I hadn't really thought about doing that, thank you! I'll add it to my kit bag. I usually take a small plastic bag (like the ones from the grocery store) and do a little trash pick up. Particularly around the parking areas.

What interesting facts has everyone learned about their local parks this month?

I learned the park closest to us is the most visited in the entire state of Kansas. There is a lot to do there given the lake area, but figured there would be more visitors to larger parks in the area or parks around Clinton Lake given its more central location.

I have found this fabulous local county park near me that has miles and miles and miles of bike trails. They’re all paved through the park, which makes the perfect to take my 5 year old on while she learns to ride her bike. We still need to carry the bike up the hills, but she’s been loving all the space to ride around and definitely going down the hills!

Any other thoughts about what you appreciate about your local park system? Doesn't have to be momentous. For example, as much as I don't like riding pavement (road rash ftl), I do really appreciate having most if not all our smaller parks connected to the larger aforementioned park in such a way. Even if the the dirt trail at the larger park is closed, there's always a new path to explore and keep the ride fresh.

Anyone have fun, memorable moments from your parks experience?

I spent my family reunion this year at the Bear Lake State Park. We water ski-ed, mountain biked, hiked, visited Ice Caves and rock climbed. These oasis's of nature are blessings that bring us together.

I ride by this placard twice on my way to and from the MTB trail. Stopped the other day to photograph it in order to research what happened. So sad and unfortunate :frown:

Eta: Posting this not to be a downer, but to encourage everyone to research the history behind your local parks and after whom and why they are named.

It is a tragic story; but one well worth knowing, reflecting and remembering on - a reminder of the many that serve.
