I can't do the TV show, does it make me a bad wheel of time fan?

If I can survive the bad art from that white World of the Wheel book, I can deal with the changes in this TV show.

 Heck, that bad art is incredibly endearing to me at this point.

Like Ephrem, that art had messed with my imagination for a lot of the characters for years because I'd always see those pictures, and they are just...not great.

one of the things I'm most looking forward to about show merchandise is there will likely be an awesome concept art book, and it's going to replace that ... thing.

One of the advantages of not seeing pictures when I read - illustrations or live action adaptions don't clash with what is in my mind

Nope. The only bad fans are aholes who gatekeep other fans. Or try to ruin the new experience for other people (or vice versa). End of story.

Wheel of Time is what Wheel of Time is for you.

I sometimes wish I hadn't watched American Gods @Jaryd Kosari. It started out so promising. :cryAnd if I can survive what happened to it, my absolute favorite book of all time...

I am also scared of watching it. I am afraid that it will ruin it for me. Baby steps watch first episode and then decide on the rest...

I mean, as long as you don't judge others who do like the show (which I don't see you doing), I don't see a problem.

I only judge @Yenie Antagar but no one else so we should be ok... :rofl

Yeah, I really hope we can escape the nasty gatekeeping where the book fans hate the show fans and accuse them of ruining everything (and vice versa), but just not being a show fan doesn't mean anything as far as I'm concerned. You like what you like. Liking things is value neutral.

I definitely won't be doing this.

@Thaddius al'Guy I had similar experience with the white art book

@Jocasta Braithe my mental image of Padan Fain was completely different. I imagined him like a skinny druggy who embraced chaos incarnate. this actor for the tv show doesn't even come close to what i imagined... and again more of the books clashing with me as i read... im going to have to pause as i read and try to force the images out of my head and replace them with what i prefer... so frustrating my brain works this way.

@Melina Tashir !!! Exeter?!?!? We did a Wheel of Time meetup in Exeter in spring 2019, was only about 5 of us here from the site!!! wish I had seen your name before to ask you to join us! blasted!

I'm with Toral, I don't have clear pictures of people in my mind when I read. Instead, I have a sense of their character and who they are. Their emotions, motivations, and actions condense into the concept of them and that's how I "see" them.

Locations are a different thing though, I do see buildings, corridors, tents, etc.

I also don't "see" clear pictures of people I read about. That's part of why I like to read authors that give a ton of detail.

So my mind is open to different translations of the "idea" that I have.

TV shows are hard to make, and even harder when the "script" started as 15 HUGE, very detailed books.

That's interesting. I've speculated that the reason I don't like descriptions (Tolkien spending 20 pages describing a tree and then five more describing mountain, Jordan spending a page describing a dress) is that they don't really do anything for me - it doesn't "paint a picture in my mind", whatever that is supposed to mean.
So the characters being different heights or races/ethnicities, or not being "stunningly beautiful" doesn't conflict with how I already see them, though I expect Rand to be taller than almost everyone else and looking like an Aiel, as that is a plot point, though it's not so essential it bothers me that they seem to have dropped it/

I think it must be hard to custom order an actor at a particular height AND general appearance AND have acting ability. That's why I don't really let things like that bother me. If I have to compromise on one of those thing, I care least about height.

I don't see images in my head either, I kinda keep a list of key features about a person or place (like, I don't know what Rand looks like but I know he's tall, has red hair, light eyes and is paler than everyone else from his village). The fancy name for it is aphantasia :)

Moiraine is short and pale in the books, as are all Cairhienin. That I think has been dropped, which is actually a change I like. The "the people in this country somehow all ended up with specific ethnic features" never made sense - either based on the 3500 years, and several countries since the Breaking, or the idea that pre- breaking it had been a utopia for thousands of years, but people had still segregted themselves based on skin colour.
But "no one knows if the Dragon is going to be channeling Saidin or Saidar" bothers me, it completely changes how society views the idea of the Dragon being Reborn. Aging up the characters bothers me. They can get away with a little as simple village folk, but get away with so much more as teenagers rather than grown adults in their early 20s. Nynaeve can still feel protective of them as Wisdom, but the relationship of the adults to the Wisdom is different to the relationship of the children, so much of what we see in the books won't make sense if she is only a couple of years older than them, rather than 8-10.
I suppose they might just be taking a lot of the complexity out of it, and just telling a simpler story, but that isnt really one I am interested in watching.
