Thank you, Cassie, for your years of dedicated service, both visible and behind-the-scenes! We’re sad to see you go, but you’ve earned a vacation!

The Amyrlin Seat is a position that is both rewarding and challenging. The person in this role must be a self-starter, bringing innovative ideas and a solid plan to the position while also being comfortable collaborating with others in the organization. The Amyrlin works closely with the other Officers, including the Keeper, Cordamora, Shatayan, and Archivist, and reports to the Board of Directors. Candidates should anticipate frequent interactions with the Keeper and Cordamora during their tenure in this position. Since this is an outward-facing role, enjoying engagement with the community is imperative.

ALL applications for this position will be considered, whether the applicant meets every listed requirement or not. The requirements are best used as a tool to understand the expected needs of the position, not as a strict cutoff for consideration. Hiring the right person for the role is more important than a checklist.

Since TarValon.Net is a nonprofit, the Amyrlin Seat serves as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), handling the duties of the President as outlined in the Bylaws.

The Library page for the Amyrlin Seat can be found HERE.
The community Bylaws can be found HERE.

If you have any questions about the position, please contact Cassie (amyrlin@tarvalon.net) or the Board (board@tarvalon.net, chairman@tarvalon.net).

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Providing cohesive leadership for the organization as a whole (goal setting, making sure all parts are working together towards the same objectives, and that those objectives serve our mission statement and organizational health. Communicating these goals effectively across the community up, down and sideways), keeping perspective and vision.
  • Creating and stewarding our culture (decision making that profoundly affects how members interact, promoting a culture of cooperation and personal investment, helping members to grow relationships with one another). This is the single most influential position when it comes to how the community "feels."
  • Team building among our volunteers and throughout the community.
  • Management of resources (budget, human resources, and time resources... are the projects we're working on the ones we should be working on? What is the cost/benefit and is it worth it? When do we put our efforts towards a new solution, and when do we pull the plug on something that hasn't worked?).
  • Liaison between the Board of Directors and Officers/Executives. This position is not a member of the Board, but works with them most closely.
  • Being the public face of TarValon.Net (officiating ceremonies, special awards and recognition, master of ceremonies, event host, developing relationships that benefit the organization, shaking hands, kissing babies, etc.).

Expectations

  • Frequent communication with the Keeper and Cordamora.
  • You can expect to spend 20+ hours per week on this position.
  • Attend Board Meetings (held at least annually, frequency changes according to need).
  • Meet individually with the Board annually (all Officers do this).
  • Strong leadership skills, or a willingness to learn them.
  • Must know how to use tactfulness, discretion, and diplomacy.
  • Active participation in the community.

Qualifications

  • At least 5 years as an active member of TarValon.Net.
  • At least 3 of those years as a Senior Member (does not need to be continuous)
  • Have served as an Administrator or higher in our organization, or demonstrate a clear understanding of how our community is structured and how the volunteers fulfill their duties and dedication to the community.
  • Be a member in good standing, and at least 21 years of age.
  • Sex, gender, and gender identity are not considered.

Non-Essential, but Helpful Qualifications

  • Active participation in more than one department over their time as a member.
  • Time served in the Hall.
  • Ability to attend events with some regularity (the Amyrlin is not required to attend all of them, but some travel is required for this position).

Officer Hiring Process

  1. Gather applications.
  2. Evaluate applications and extend interview invitations.
  3. Interview selected applicants. One or two interviews is standard.
  4. Evaluate the interviews and select the successful applicant. (This can take some time, not hearing back immediately is not a sign that you were not selected.)
  5. Offer position to selected applicant.
  6. Once the position has been accepted, inform the other applicants.
  7. Announce our new Keeper of the Chronicles, begin training, transfer permissions, hit the ground running.

To apply for this position, email: board@tarvalon.net, chairman@tarvalon.net with the subject line APPLICATION — AMYRLIN — YOURNAMEHERE. Please include:

  • Your Tower name
  • an explanation of your vision for the position
  • what you would bring to the role

Good luck to all who apply.

Thank you Cassie for your leadership

We've received an excellent question, the answer to which I believe will be useful for the whole community.

Residing in the USA or North America is not required for the position of Amyrlin. The Amyrlin might need to coordinate event attendance with other Officers, expand the online experience for events, or so on, but I think from the good discussion I've seen in Community feedback regarding events, there are several good solves for this. Residing outside NA would not count against an applicant in the hiring process.

Everyone has something unique to offer and we invite any member interested in the position to apply.
