Hullo, all.

New to the site, but not the the Wheel -- I first started reading when Eye of the World was first released (on the recommendation of my lab-partner in Advanced Biology, since we tended to finish everything before the others, so had time to read or doodle in the meantime), my only issue with them being the time between (of course -- that allowed for time to re-read them, so...). I fell out of reading them for awhile, but am catching back up now. Hard to pick a favorite characters, but I have fondness for Perrin (I appreciate the simple honesty he continues to put forth :) ), Lan (I appreciate a dry sense of humor), and Nynaeve, though I have fondness for Thom and a few others.

I came to the site, since a friend from college is in, and I've also been seeking ways to find people of like mind, since I am fairly isolated up here, and with being recently unemployed, even more isolated than I once was. Before I was 'let go', I was a software tester -- testing avionics software (primarily communications and navigation, though some displays), though I've tested other software as well. That's not to say it was what I wanted to do, but it paid the bills. If wishes worked, I would write and teach, but we'll see where the Pattern sends me now.

I'm a voracious reader, and love Tolkein, Narnia, Harry Potter, Valdemar (older more than the more recent books), the Wizard of Fourth Street books, the Cross-Time engineer books, the Spellsinger series, the Flinx series, and various other things (Deborah Harkness' new series is a good read, if dense). I love dumb movies (Mel Brooks), am a closet sappy romantic. I love music, with the exception of the bulk of rap & country, though there are some I find I like. I'm a mediocre and very inconsistent artist, but I can occasionally put out something I don't mind (avatar I doodled), usually with pen, ink, and colored pencils, but I've experimented with acrylics, too. I write stories, predominantly fantasy, though some slapstick fantasy sometimes creeps out of the mind, though I am as-of-yet unpublished. I play flute, soprano recorder, and have a tolerable singing voice, though my upper range is cutting back lately.

Anyway -- currently in the "Southern Tier" of New York (if you make a triangle on a map between Binghamton, Elmira, and Ithaca, you'll find me close to the center, sitting about with my cat.

That's about it from me for now!

Yours,
Gwenne

PS - Favorite creature: gryphons. :)

Welcome to the forums! Feel free to message me if you have any questions or just want to chat!

Foster's Spellsinger series is what really started me reading fantasy and he's one of my favorite authors!

Thank you for all the wonderful greetings; it's nice to have something positive happen for a change. :)

I've always loved the Spellsinger series: who can forget a Marxist dragon, a unicorn who definitely won't be drawn to any virginal young ladies, and turtle-wizard with the drawers in the front of his plastron. :) Foster's one of my favorite authors, as well. Simon Hawke is also good (he tends towards a bit of lightness here and there in his books as well).

Look forward to becoming more involved here -- especially once the manual comes back up (I see the Shadow is working its way in some of your servers).

Exactly! And don't forget the very strange instrument center to the story!

If something isn't working, it is probably a hold over from our recent move. If you notice something specific you can mention it in the appropriate thread in the "Transition to vBulletin" forum.

Welcome, Gwynne! Clearly, you have excellent taste in books! I read Spellsinger back in high school, but I've never run across someone else who's read it! Have you ever read anything by Meredith Ann Pierce - Firebringer or Darkangel Trilogy? Or the Abhorsen Trilogy by Garth Nix? Those are some of my favorite books... and as it would be silly to recommend WoT in here, I recommend those :)

Don't think I've read anything by Meredith Ann Pierce; I'll have a look. I've read some things by Garth Nix, but not those, I think. I first started his things as 'riding the bus home from DC every day' thing before passing it on to my nephews: the days of the week series, which were odd, but enjoyable. Going back through the WoT books that I've read -- I'd stopped reading, wanting to wait for close to the series being finished so I wouldn't fret myself to pieces over what was going to happen -- up to Crown of Swords, which was released when I worked at a bookstore in my last quarter of university. So -- catching up now, of course, though the wait between the time I finish Towers and Memory coming out will be bad enough (yay for Kindle's, at least, allowing me to get the book the second it's out ;) ).

Spellsinger was hard to find for a long time, with those that actually had copies clinging to them, but Amazon is FINALLY releasing them on Kindle edition. YAY!

You might also enjoy things by Christopher Stasheff (Warlock series, Her Majesty's Wizard books, etc.).
