Gay Character? (spoilers for almost all books)

I don't think its an aouthors place to necessarily worry about it. :) I mean if you are inspired to do it because it fits with what you are writing and have in mind, then awesome. But I don't like the thought that its seeming to become mandatory to include gay folks in each story told. Maybe I missed the boat but for instance ( jumping a bit here), In the Game of Thrones television show Renly and Loras tyrell were suddenly gay and when I read the novels I didn't get that AT ALL. Renly if anything seemed to be a ladies man or to very much have the makings of a ladies man. As did Loras Tyrell. just because they enjoyed fine clothing and comforts didn't mean they were homosexual. And loras was a young and impressionable 16 year old that was enamored NOT with Renly per Se , but with the chivalric idea in general of serving a great Lord loyally.
On the same note I don't know why gay characters should be more prevelant ( unless they further the storyline?) than any other characters?I mean there are quite a lot of minorities out there and we don't feel the need to make sure THEY have a place in fantasy? Such as the disabled ( though maimed soldiers do appear), mentally challenged?( although Hodor in GoT was cool!), and the list could go on.
I mean I have no problem with it at all, except if it feels FORCED. and sometimes it does. I haven't completed the WoT yet but it sounds like Jordan DID a fine job of including homosexual people And Bi as well without making it seem out of the ordinary or seem like the primary focus , which I believe to be just another example of his superior abilities. :)That's just my 2 cents so you can definitely just ignore me if you disagree! :)

Gay characters are definitely hinted at through the books from pillow friends (stated fairly emphatically) to the two Shienarians who always wanted to work with each other. I thought RJ did a pretty good job of making it seem common place, not in-your-face, and a really good type of book for, say, getting sheltered, conservative, homeschooled teens to open their minds a bit about the gay community.

I would HOPE this is the case, however, I'm not sure conservative, homeschooled teens are socially allowed to read WoT, lolz. WoT is not very big in my area, nor fantasy in general sadly, but I remember what happened when teens here started reading Harry Potter like crazy and parents took the books away, tried to exorcize the kids, made them to go to church more, etc. It was insane times. Made me switch churches! (And now I don't go anymore at all, but that's another story.) I cross my fingers though that some sheltered kids wander into the fantasy section of B&N and pick up TEoTW and get hooked! (Or even their parents...)

@brandegoris, Well said!!! I read the books before watching the series, and was also taken aback when Loras and Renly were together. I totally felt like I missed something in the books, but with GoT, it's hard to miss the sexual innuendos and the like...they are rather laid out nice and plain for you, lolz.

Morvath :) Absolutely! I am a Big Nerd when it comes to the chivilric ideal. And all i saw in the books was a impressionable young man that ALSO loves the chivilric ideal and thought he had found a KING that he could be proud of! I mean it would be like saying that King Arthur's knights all just thought he was a hawt-E? NO! LOL They admired the man!! Believed he was a great man and a good king! :) At least hat what I got outta the books. Like you said , George Martinn isnt known for his Subtlety ! He usually just spells stuff right out for you! So if he DID intend for the relationship to be there , then certainly i DID miss it.
I have read plenty of books where a gay relationship was part. And it is all well and good. I never have a problem with it or anything, I just dont like it when tv series take liberties with the books. I mean GRANTED that is GOING to happen. MAINLY because of budget constraints or time constraints. So i dont usually mind them. BUT this decision by HBO just seemed kind of Arbitrary?

I am glag there is no homosexuality in the wot....the light,i belive, does not allow it

Um. What? :scratch There IS homosexuality in WoT, first off; someone has obviously not read the thread here. Second, why in the hell would the Light/the Creator not "allow" it?

This is a bit besides the point, but I read something about homosexuality in WoT on another site somewhere (actually, it might even have been here on TVnet, it's been so long), and they invented a male-equivalent for "pillow friends" - they called it "bunk buddies"

One assumes that in social situations where men will largely be around men, and women will largely be around women, the relative rate of same-sex sexual activities will rise, even if only as a matter of practicality.

It'd be interesting to see which Aes Sedais viewed the pillow friends thing as being indicative of immaturity, as this might be us hints of the general attitudes of their Ajahs. It's not inconceivable that different Ajahs viewed sexual practice differently. If I were to make stuff up myself, I'd say that Greens probably view heterosexual activities as more positive than Red Ajah, who might see the love between two females as a "purer" kind of love (kinda like how ancient Greeks viewed male-on-male love as being more glorious than heterosexual), and perhaps certain Ajahs, like the White, would view sexual relations in general as being bodily distractions from their work, kinda like many real life ascetics and philosophers do. Again, I just made this up, but maybe someone else knows more.
