This is possibly a stupid/obvious question, but I was wondering: is there any reason we can't use phone emojis on the forums? When I first noticed we could only use forum emojis, I was kind of happy about it, because I love our custom emojis and they're such a big part of our culture. But, in the intervening years the standard emojis have become such an integral part of how I communicate tone online that it feels really weird not having them. It sounds silly, but I actually wonder if having access to a broader range of emojis might help to reduce interpersonal conflict. There are many times that I would use a standard emoji to soften what I'm saying/better communicate tone, but there isn't an equivalent option on the forums.

A lot of weird support and not all platforms (browsers, keyboards, and other things natively support them) ‍♂️Some do though but they can look weird on different peoples systems and maybe not represent what was intended. By providing some that work the same for all.. it just works and people see what you expected them to. Edit: Actually it showed the wizard from the 'man mage link below' when I was typing originally but when I went to preview now I see the 'male' symbol.

I know I post some from my mac or phone and I get the image I want.. but on my windows laptop they show two emoji (Male and Mage symbol for my example) or a different emoji then I meant.

Older but explains a bit of this:

Would it perhaps be possible to import if not all at least the more common of the standard emotes? I find especially a lot of emotion/reaction ones like thinking, joy, facepalm etc would be useful.

Thank you! I'd really appreciate it. I feel like people would read my tone better if I could add in more facepalm and cold sweat emojis. :look:

we need a custom Picard facepalm one though. One true facepalm.

I think getting more of the most-used emojis would be good. http://www.emojistats.org/ is sourced from iPhone users with the EmojiXpress app. Unicode has a frequency chart, but it's showing for 12.0 and we're up to 14.0 so I don't know how accurate it still is.

  • face with tears of joy but that could easily be  unless people think crying while laughing should be separate(which also brings up "loudly crying face")
  • hearts - maybe one for each Ajah/Company? or at a minimum the standard red or pink. We have :lovebut it's too giggly if you want to use a heart for emotional support a la the care reaction. This goes along with:
  • smiling face with smiling eyes and three hearts
  • face throwing a kiss
  • we already have :rofl
  • smiling face with heart-shaped eyes
  • thumbs up and/or 100%
  • smiling face with smiling eyes has :pleased-1: vibes
  • smiling face with open mouth and cold sweat
  • face with pleading eyes
  • smirking face
  • we already have ;)
  • see no evil monkey
  • pensive face which actually looks sad to me so :(
  • we've got :rolleyes for face with rolling eyes
  • face with stuck out tongue and winking eye is almost :p ? But more wacky. Oh and there's also grinning face with one large and one small eye, which is wacky
  • weary face could be D:
  • flushed face is :$
  • smiling face with smiling eyes and hand covering mouth
  • face palm is :facepalm
  • hugging face? We do have :grouphug and :hug although as above the smiles make it less appropriate (in my mind) for "sympathy/support" hugs
  • thinking face
  • smiling face with open mouth and tightly closed eyes (><)

There are more, but those are some good examples.

Wait, is there a rule against this? I've been doing my dictation or bringing up my native emoji keyboard to insert emojis as a matter of course since navigating the in-forum emoji panel was cumbersome. The less menus I have to navigate, the more accessible I find it. I also use the site non-visually. If there's a rule against standard emojis I've missed it.

There's no rule, they just don't actually show up on the boards in my experience! The accessibility issue is a really good point in favor of allowing them.

I gotcha! I was... really worried for a minute there. I use emojis rather often, but lost the ability to click through menus effectively over the years. Your response is reassuring.

I just wanted to give this idea a little bump! I really do think it could help with diplomacy on the forums, and allow people to better express tone in a way that's quite difficult right now.

We are not on Xenforo 2.X so that will not work for us until after the upgrade.
