My only concern is what someone sees as going to far (enough to report) and then it doesn't translate would then shift to the favoring others. :cheeseeni:

I'm not sure how less moderation would work though. I know conversations in general about hot topics get heated. So if we aren't going to have someone go ok pause for a minute and then come back to talk that it's going to go too far.

If the Keeper is unsure, she does have others she can consult on the reports.

We could also refer to it as self moderation rather than no moderation. The user will need to decide how far they want to go and if they're willing to suffer the consequences if they go too far.

Echoing Ari's question about life experiences, would something like the LGBTQ+ table in Ye Olde Warder and Hen still be allowed?

Well, I know the moderator burn-out rate was significant, and understandable. On the other hand, this sounds in danger of quickly become the name-calling shout-fests that comprise the political forums at other sites, and which I've often been proud of our site for eschewing. And then again, there's the odious chore of moderating angry people. So I can't really complain when we've had nearly two decades of moderated discussion.

Okay, so quick question. Are we going to be creating duplicate threads for the many discussion topics that frequently roam about politics, religion and such (for instance, abortion rights, gay marriage, etc). I find that separating the two is kind of irrelevant. It would have been just as easy to establish the new rules in the CE forum without creating a false separation. But I'm not in charge and whatever decisions y'all wanna make are fine with me :)

Is there an option to opt into one and not both? Could I, for example, join religion and spirituality but opt out of news and politics?

Yes, you can. I just did it the other way around when I filled out the form (into news, out of religion).

Oh I wanted to opt into both to begin with, but I am not wild about the idea of CE unmoderated... so it'll be a trial run and I may opt out later.

To my understanding, this is meant to be a fresh start. If you want to launch a thread with a topic that was available in the old CE forum, go for it. But the discussion will need to grow in N&P at that point. I don't think going and recreating everything would make any sense if/until you/someone wants to post in it though. Correct me if I'm wrong, @Mieriana Souvra!

You can opt into both now and, if you decide you want to opt out of just one, you can.

True but I have seen some arguments that would be going to far already. So I just see concerns, and those were over thread issues (not the thread in general with that idiot bashing tv.net, other threads).

I'm not the Keeper (and not speaking in my official role), but I'll say this: if someone's being an unmitigated jerk, you are not required by any rule at TV.net to interact with them. You can, in fact, completely ignore them. Often times, everyone ignoring a troll is what makes them give up. That ostracism would be much more pointed in a forum which is attached to RL gatherings. The forum being self-moderated does not mean that hurt feelings will be trapped there. You can't carry the argument outside the forum, but I know that there are already people whose company I do not enjoy because of the way they carry themselves in debate. Everyone in that forum will be an adult, and it'd be a generally good idea for them to remember it.

Sounds like peeps should treat the new CE a lot like they treat politics on Twitter. Which is chill with me, except for the confidentiality wall. I am unsurprised by the people who disagree with me.

Note that I'm fully aware my opinion don't matter all that much because I'm basically absentee these days, but...I dunno. I've been here longer than I haven't. Hard not to have feels about changes, regardless of involvement. *shrugs*

All of these opinions help us Ninya and I'm happy you and everyone else are sharing them. We are working to find a way to foster engagement and a real exchange of ideas, but this will be new and I'm sure there will be ways that it can be improved over time. All of the feedback and opinions will be helpful as we evaluate how we might be able to do that.

I like your opinion Ninya Sedai. Just saying.

I agree with Ari Sedai that if one was to say post something about abortion rights, that could be both spiritual and political, does one have to do two threads? Seems a bit redundant. Same with LGBTQ rights and other topics that are neither one nor the other but could be posted in CE if a news story was relevant or if a person just wanted to express how they felt about something in their lives.

I also agree with the worry about "self moderating" as that is what led to moderating in the first place and such. However we have, as a site, gone through many changes and came out okay. So I am willing to give it a whirl and if it does not work, we do have avenues for change such as the Chain of concern (as I often refer to it) via the mods, and the review of the annual meetings.

Filled out the form, R&U

I would say pick which forum it fits best in with regard to how you want to discuss the issue.

To stick with your abortion rights example- if you want to discuss the spiritual impacts of abortion related choices, you would go to the spirituality forum. If you are talking about rights and policies and how you think these rights should be structured in society, that's more news and politics.

Spirituality and Religion is meant more for theological sorts of discussion while News and Politics is more about the issues of the day (essentially what has normally gone in current events).

I mean, Ninya, I kinda agree with you and I think the answer to recent incidents and failures should absolutely not be to do away with moderation all together by creating The Purge in forum format, covered only by a very thin sheet of Code of Conduct. Which is basically just vague, undetailed legalese shirt to cover the butt of the "corporation" and enable continued biased judgment.

That said, I'm really unsure who these dangerous types are that you're so scared of. Because I don't think there's anyone actually dangerous in this community? Can't think of any, anyway, and I can easily name a dozen people here whom I severely dislike, yet would never, ever consider dangerous. The only ones that even mildly approach dangerous on rare occasions are the ones who come in every now and then with blunt statements and no regard for the feelings they hurt. Like you and me. (Well, actually, I'm terrified of the feelings I'll hurt, but sometimes blunt statements like this one need to be made, imo.) And I sure don't feel like I'll be any more protected. Probably even less so now that there's this prettied up legal stick to slap me around with. :sword

I have never in my life seen you be worried about hurting feelings, FWIW, so I don't think you need to worry. :hug
