Alert settings in watch forum option

I was changing alert settings in some forums I want/need to keep an eye on, and I noticed that you can choose one of the following:

Alerts for new threads
Alerts for new messages

However, you can't do both. I was curious how this works particularly for a forum such as the Hall or another forum where you really need to have alerts for both, instead of subscribing alert preferences for specific threads. I've noticed that if I just watch a forum via new threads, I don't get the alerts for new messages, and sometimes it's just healthier to get the alerts instead of checking forums 20+ times a day (especially as a Sitter and for ajah leadership positions).

Is there a better option to have for this or am I just confused about the way the new messages only option works?

I think you can get alerts for new messages by each individual thread. For instance, you click watch thread for every thread you want notifications for.

I have put an alert on the entire forum Hall of the Tower, and I then get notified every time a new thread is started. I then use the "new posts" function to see every thread in every forum. That way, I'm not missing anything
