Is there an official stance on using ai art for avatars? Since it pulls elements from samples online, does it violate the rules about copyrighted artwork? Or would it be okay since there's usually nothing recognizable to the human eye as another person's artwork?

I don't have an answer just yet but this is an excellent question I am going to take to some folks who are smarter than me (and I hate them for it) to see if I can get you a definitive answer. Thanks for bringing this up!

Okay, because AI generally mixes things up from the start it is impossible to identify the source material and because as an avatar it will not be used for commercial purposes we should be fine to accept AI generated avatars.

This was an excellent question @Dnae Ila! +10 points to Slytherin! 🐍

Not to put too fine a point on it, but "mixed up" art from sources that largely do not consent to the practice of scraping art sites for content to "train" the AI on doesn't make it an ethical decision.

At this point AI is still in it's infancy. Trying to explain copyright laws to a child that's just learning is a real problem.

And who is the child in this scenario...? The programmers who knowingly scrape art sites and private portfolios, or those who make use of the AI?

Thank you for your reply. Sorry I forgot about this for half a year! :facepalm-1: I can see this sparked a bit of a debate. Is this still the ruling? I have an AI generated image that used photos of myself to construct the face. I would like to use it so my "face" here is more or less my actual face. Should I be in the clear to use it?

Ps. I'll take those points for Hufflepuff, thank you :p

I actually have one of these as well that I've been wanting to use. Thanks for asking.

Still stands.

But as a serpent, I only award them to Slytherin.
I take them for Hufflepuff anyway. Who do you think wins between a snake and a honey badger?
