Hello all. I just finished reading A Crown of Swords. Unfortunately, halfway through reading it I went through a huge life-changing event and so I feel like my perception of the book is somewhat skewed. What did you think of the book? (Please spoiler tag anything past the seventh book please--thanks!)

:) I haven't read it yet. :) Because I read like a 4th grade child that has eaten too much candy... :(

I liked ACoS just fine, honestly. Rand's particular arc continues getting really dark in the aftermath of the end of Lord of Chaos, but I love pretty much everyone else and don't blame him for having some trust issues after the box incident, ACoS is also the book where I start not disliking Nynaeve. :tug

ACoS was the last book out when I started the series (APoD came out a couple months later, though,).

I read it and liked it lots. I just loved when Nynaeve broke her block and Rand's conquest of Illian. The girl's campaign in Ebou Dar was the best part of the book.

A Crown of Swords was my first "favorite" (until some of the later books trumped it). It probably had a lot to do with Nynaeve's scenes, I'd been waiting for them for a long time! :pleased-1:

I know where you're coming from Zandera. I'm rereading now and compared to last time, I can hardly remember some of the details as they were. 6 years makes a big difference in how you see the world, and a single life changing event, especially in light of the characters life changing events can really change how you read some of the stories.

 I can tell my experience reading the series is drastically different from some of yours. The Great Hunt was my first "favorite" then... if I remember correctly... The Shadow Rising? I honestly can't recall; I'll have to go back and read my first-time reader articles.

I have loved Nynaeve for a very long time and did not experience liking her 'for the first time' in Book Seven. What an interesting perspective.

Ray, I'm really worried my real life will affect my most recent assignment of completing Book Eight. I think it's one of the reasons I'm procrastinating so much. I hope it will be okay for the TVT articles. :x

My advice just KBO and take it a chapter at a time. They get long winded especially around secondary characters. Thats the hardest part

Tonight I will open the book up to the map of Ebou Dar and read about Nynaeve and Elayne. Lan is on his way there and Egwene was getting a head massage from Halima when I left off last night (which was really creepy in a Stephen King sort of way, knowing who she really is). Great place to be in the series! (I've read through book 10 and half of 11 before).

One thing I don't understand is why Egwene doesn't make Nicola or Areina swear fealty to her. She already has four other Sisters who had sworn at that point, it seems like that might have been a good way to solve the issue of them knowing she was pretending to be Aes Sedai.

And I'm a little confused about what is going on with Romanda and Lelaine wanting Egwene to question each Sister and announce the existence and possible presence of the Black Ajah in their camp. I don't get what they are trying to accomplish, or the political undertones. Maybe I was a little tired last night and need to reread that part. Any thoughts/explanations?

Wrt Nicola and Areina, I expect it's because Egwene doesn't expect their oaths of fealty to be worth the breath used to utter them, considering that without the Three Oaths to bind them, they're just words -- and then Nicola and Areina could easily tell anyone/everyone else about it, too, thus losing Egwene some of the only real advantage she'd gained up to that point.

Wrt the Black Ajah stuff, I think I recall that that was thought up/recommended by the Black Ajah to sow dissent.

Both those explanations make perfect sense. It's been years since I've read the series and besides some of the major events, it's like hearing the story for the first time again. That Black Ajah stuff seems pretty foreboding- I know there are some in the camp, but I forget who, and that makes reading again all that more suspenseful!

Thanks!
