Welcome Ciann! Its great that the show was able to coax you back towards the books so you could finish them. Did you have any particular favourite book or character arc?

Thank you!

That sounds like me, I used to make lists as well :giggle

Retellings are a favourite of mine too. I absolutely love Circe and The Song of Achilles by Madeleine Miller. Retellings of fairytales and folklore is even better

I'm not at all well organised, in truth, but I love a good list or table - always have. I just love tracking similarities and differences, I think, and it helped with memory. Miller is absolutely fantastic and I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to her take on Persephone. Also a big fan of Natalie Haynes and Pat Barker's work. I've really enjoyed how in vogue fairytale/lore retellings have been in the past couple of years (or at least it feels that way!) - there's some fun stuff out there for everyone, feels like.

Welcome; it's to have you here!

Thank you so much!

Welcome to the party Ciann! I too and a big mythology fan (Greek, Roman, Norse, WoT, LoTR, etc. etc.). Can't wait to get to know you more!

Thanks! Not a big party-er, but we'll see how I get on, lol. And right on. Love that! The intersection of fantasy and mythology is a wonderful spot to sit, especially when the former is heavily impacted by the latter.

Welcome to Tar Valon, Ciann! I am a fan of mythology too, mostly Greek and Egyptian though. Well, if we consider Tolkien's creation as a real world myth, and probably we should, then the first place goes to Tolkien before other myths. :look:

Do you know Age of Mythology? Oh nostalgia, that was a great game!

Welcome to Tar Valon!!

I found podcasts in the last year and love hockey pods :look: Do have a certain genre of podcasts you like?

Thanks so much! Woah, that's an interesting one. I'm afraid my knowledge of hockey lives and dies by the very few romance books I've read that focus on players thereof, lol. One of my cousins lives in Canada and his family are very, very into it, though. As far as what I listen to goes, it's normally just reflective of whatever interests I already have - lots of book related stuff (classics and romance heavy - examples: Lit Society, Overdue, What Did We Just Read, Tar Valon or Bust, Classical Stuff You Should Know, Pod & Prejudice, We Read It One Night, Bonnets at Dawn), television and film (first and re-reacts to various movies or shows - examples: Wheel Takes, Edicts on E. Dicks, Straight2L, Shibden After Dark, Anglophilia) Music/Beatles related, (One Sweet Dream, Beatles Book, Ranking The Beatles, Song vs Song, I Am the Eggpod), etc. As you can imagine, I have a long list of Things To Still Listen To...

Hello and welcome, Ciann!

Thanks!

Hi and welcome!!!

Hi. Thanks!

Welcome!!! I am a mythology fan, as well. I love all types but I think Egyptian may be a favorite and one I want to learn more about.

Have you read American Gods? It is my absolute favorite book and such an eclectic mix of different cultures mythological beings and such. So good!

Sweet. Egyptian is really, really neat, but I don't have a single book just focused on it, I don't think. What I know primarily comes from larger books that include is all. My high school Ancient History teacher ADORED Egypt, though, so we were pretty lucky in how much we were able to study of it and the religion at the time.

And absolutely. Give me something Gaiman wrote and 9 times out of 10, I'll love it, lol.

Welcome Ciann, lovely to meet you! :hug

I love mythology and folklore too, always gravitated towards anything involving fairies and plants - especially if it's local but I'll happy with any flavour of weird and wonderful really :)

Thank you so very much! And you.

Ooh, interesting. The fantasy I gravitate towards is more human-focused generally, but as a kid I was very into fairies, perhaps due to a large number of the Enid Blyton books tiny!me consumed, I suspect.

Welcome to Tar Valon! I’m also big into mythology (of all cultures) and a huge fan of logic puzzles and word games. Sadly I don’t make much time for those these days.

Wonderful! And heh. I mean, it happens to all of us at one time or another, I suspect. I have literally zero friends or social life and that's been the case for about fifteen years, so that kind of helps me get my reading and puzzling hours in. :pleased-1:

Welcome to TarValon.Net! :D

Mythology and language were two subject I really loved in school, so when I chose to do a Classical Studies degree in college the history part came along in the package. It also expanded my knowledge from just Greek and Roman into Egyptian territory as well.

Thank you! Oh, that sounds absolutely wonderful. I would've loved to have done something like that but seventeen year old me didn't make Great Choices, and whilst I loved a lot of the Lit. and History I studied, nothing Ancient/Classical was on offer, which kind of was unfortunate.

Thank you! And absolutely. The poor things had been sitting on my bookcases for far too long whilst being neglected, I fear. I just lost interest in fantasy generally at one point, so that didn't help. Both loves have returned, though, and it was great fun finishing them off. Funny what things I remembered and what I didn't, though. I'm absolutely a basic b**ch and always gravitated towards basically anything involving Moiraine, Siuan, Birgitte, Nynaeve or Avi, tbh. [Edited to include Verin because not including her was too big an oversight. Note to self: do not rush posts…] Don't know how I'd rank the books but basically 3 through 7 are pretty *chefs kiss* to me in particular. Oh, and special mention to New Spring, which actually was the one WoT book I read about five times as a teenager. Had no idea WHY I was so drawn to it and Moiraine and Siuan back then, but Very Late To Understanding Myself me totally gets it now, oops. #pillowfriends4life

No wrong choices when it comes to love of mythology, IMO. I enjoyed Tolkein but I have to say, I generally sat myself on the Lewis end of the spectrum when it came to those two friends. Though that may be the religious upbringing speaking, lol. Tolkein was great and the world-building and linguistics work was top tier, but insofar as characters go, it just didn't hook me like other fantasy stuff did, tbh.

And I've heard of it, but no, sorry! Games weren't big for me growing up. I was that little anxiety-ridden chicken who couldn't bear playing much of anything lest I 'die' or 'fail'... Doesn't quite sound like that kind of game, tbf, but am unfamiliar.

Welcome! I'm also interested in mythology, though I find I've been distracted by other things in recent years.

Thank you so much! I tend to fixate quickly and easily, and at times, those burn out within weeks of deep-diving every last old LiveJournal community or YouTube channel, but at other times, they last the distance. Interest definitely has waxed and waned over the years, but my love of reading picked up stronger than ever about three years ago, and mythology was definitely a big part of that.

It was a great game! Have you tried the (relatively) new Chinese expansion?

I would've loved to have done something like that but seventeen year old me didn't make Great Choices, and whilst I loved a lot of the Lit. and History I studied, nothing Ancient/Classical was on offer, which kind of was unfortunate.
To be honest, teenage me didn't make great choices either. They cut the degree program because it wasn't popular enough, but those of us who had already declared were grandfathered in. What they didn't explicitly tell us was that they were going to be cutting a bunch of the classes that went along with it. :/

Can just add it to the my pile of 'Oops, Wish I Could Turn Back Time' choices. We love paying the university back for a degree that isn't and won't be used, lol. But seriously, there was a lot worthwhile about it, and at least you now have something to impress people with, lol. That really blows, though. Let people know what they're getting, ffs.

Hello and welcome!

Thanks!

Thank you!

I only got around to reading New Spring in the past year or so. It was so nice to have a new (to me) WoT book after so many years. I loved seeing so much more of Siuan and Moiraine early days in the tower!

Welcome to Tar Valon, Ciann!!

I’m also a fan of mythology. Greek is my favorite, but I’m also a fan of Egyptian. Celtic mythology is something that I want to learn more about. I’ve got a book with some of the myths, but I haven’t invested any time into it yet. I also like some crosswords but lean more towards word searches.

Oh, how fun! I don't think New Spring was at the library when I first borrowed and promptly bought the series, but it definitely was by the time I got to the latter books and/or re-read a year or two later. Whether because of the brevity or the smaller POV focus or the 'friendship' between Moiraine and Siuan or even just a heavier focus on Tower world-building, I was so, so, so obsessed with it above the others. It's cool when you have new content after a long time. I ended up looking at the graphic novel of the same a few months back and that was pretty neat.

Welcome to Tar Valon, Ciann!!

Thank you so much! Actual taste. There definitely isn't as much stuff out there as pertains to Celtic, at least in terms of books you're likely to find in a bookstore, but I still dig it. Maybe just a way of connecting more to my own heritage a little more. Or the novelty. ;)

Word searches are also fun. They just remind me far too much of slow days at school - it was always the big Rainy Day Activity during primary school. That and colouring in mandelas, from what I recall.
